Assignment 1, Question 1 Answers

a. Using fire-rated insulation on treated pine glulam will enhance its fire resistance
property, but this degree depends on the rating of the insulation and its compatibility
with the treated pine glulam. It can be incorporated either into the spaces within the
treated pine glulam to restrict fire within it, or between the glulam beams to ensure
that fire does not spread between the coupled beams and the building materials of the
swimming pool. Oversized sections can also be used in this instance to elevate the
durability and structural strength properties of the treated pine glulam but should be
applied to withstand the load requirements of the encased swimming pool. The
members used in the portal frame components of enclosed swimming pools can also
be treated with wood preservatives by applying high pressure within a treatment
vessel in a process known as pressure treatment. This type of treatment mitigates
fungus development, insect infestation, decay, and moisture damage which is induced
by the humid environment of encased swimming pools.
b. Fire-rated insulation can also be employed for hardwood or treated pine poles that
support a pole-framed dwelling to protect the structural integrity of the poles, in
addition to restricting the spread of fire throughout the structure. Using oversized
sections can also increase stability and adequate load bearing capacity but should be
chemically treated to mitigate decaying defects and insect infestation. Applying wood
preservatives to the surface or submerging the poles in a preservative solution such as
a copper base are the two methods of the chemical treatment which contribute to the
increased lifespan and structural integrity of the treated pine poles.
c. For treated LVL in a timber bridge deck, fire-rated insulation is not typically of large
concern since it is an enclosed structure but can be considered in anticipation of any
fire incident to increase its fire resistance properties. Oversized sections in a timber
deck increases its stiffness and strength but should be designed to facilitate an array of
load requirements and treated to reduce susceptibility to climatic and temperature
variations. Sealing the treated LVL in a timber bridge deck will safeguard the long-
term durability and structural integrity of the deck. Pressure treatment, as used for
treated pine glulam, can also be used for treated LVL. Dip treatment is also
considered, whereby instead of subjecting the wood to high pressure in a vessel, the
wood is exposed to preservatives through immersion which deeply penetrates the LVL
material and provides protection against insect infestation, decay and fungal growth.
