Few things to 1. If you are feeling stressed, close your eyes, take 3-4-5 deep breathes and then again look the paper. It will feel some calm.
keep in in mind There is a scientific reason behind hit. Our breathing rate controls the release of various chemicals responsible for controlling
during fear or anxiety.
examinaon
2. Keep the water with you. Preferable, keep the electral powder (ORS) or juice. It will keep up your energy high during exam
by improved metabolism/its nutrients. Remember, Brain cells (Neurons) perform better when they are hydrated.

A general 1. Never ever take a queson on ego. All opons bear equal marks. It is necessary that you visit your paper atleast 3 mes
suggeson while solving the paper. 1st me for those – about which you are sure, 2nd me for those, about which – you have litle doubts
regarding the and need applicaon of mind and finally for those – where you might have to take the risk if you have not solved enough
approach to number of quesons.
the paper
2. These techniques will not work always. So, use them with cauon. Remember, there is actually no substute for hard
word and consistent preparaon. Even technique favour those who are consistent with their studies.

3. it is necessary, if you are not able to solve inially 10-20 quesons, don’t take it too ghtly. Many mes, the next quesons
have all your luck but you never see them since you are busy mourning the first 10-20 quesons. This is a grave mistake. You
must not do it.

4. If you have eliminated 1 or 2 opons, I suggest you to take a chance (if you have not done enough number of quesons).
With 50-50 probability, there are maximum chances to get to the right answer (where you have eliminated 2 opons)

5. While solving any queson, always focus on key words. They contain your biggest opportunity.

6. Also, while solving the paper, do not try to categorize the quesons e.g. I will solve polity quesons first and then economy
and so all. Take the paper as an organic enty.

7. Take calculate risk. Do not depend too much on eliminaon technique only to get eliminated from the final list.

Remember, Knowledge > Logic > Technique. So, keep studying and do not get excessively dependent on these techniques.

INFO/CAUTION These techniques may not work with Coaching Mocks. This is since, the professors of UPSC and the students/teachers who
set the paper – they are different and they make paper with a different mindset. This is infact one of the reasons that UPSC
Actual Paper each year – keep surprising those – who depend completely on Coaching Mocks.

Infact, this is one of the biggest mistakes many do – who take coaching mock too serious but they never take the UPSC PYQ
seriously. This ends up in failure.

At the same me, remember, you must not ignore your standard material. Luck happens where preparaon meets
opportunity. So, if you are enrely depending upon the eliminaon technique, you are planning to play with fire. Do not do
this mistake. You should have an opmum preparaon.

Few General These techniques will help you to understand where to focus. I also have shown at places by the examples in the later part of
things this document that how you can use these in one way or the other. Remember the rule of simplicity. And take paper on its
face value. Do not go in much depth and do overthinking while solving a paper. Many mes, overthinking leads us to mark
the wrong answer. Solve the paper with a posive atude.

Few things to keep in mind

2 Extreme statements are wrong generally YEAR 2022 – QUESTION NUMBER 28
(Be cautious with words like mandatory,
impossible, cannot, never, unlimited,
enormous, sudden, any, largest,
anywhere, always, all, none, no, entirely
etc)

These statements give a sense of having

an extreme nature – like only they can be
– nothing else

Cauon – it does not mean – that they

are always wrong. This technique has
limited ulity in the Polity secon – since
many mes, UPSC Examiner tend to take
the exact statement directly picked from
Constuon which are menoned
exactly many mes in Laxmikanth too.

Ulity – see the opon 3. It is wrong.

Eliminang opon 3, you can reach the
answer b

3 Exact data is wrong many mes: If the
statement contains exact data, number
then, it is likely that it would be wrong.

e.g. See this queson. This was asked in

2016

Ulity - The third statement is an exact

data – it is wrong.
Eliminang opon 3, you can easily
reach the answer which is (b)

4 The name of the Internaonal
Organizaon is wrong. Here, generally
UPSC gives the wrong name of an
Internaonal Organizaon like WHO or
an Internaonal body. E.g. they will say –
this iniave was launched by XYZ. Here,
generally XYZ is wrong.
e.g. See this queson of 2021. Here, it is
saying GOC grants licence ….. – UPSC
plays here
Here, global ocean commission is wrong.
Here.
If you could eliminate 1, you reach to
the answer b

5 Name of Instuons are wrong.
Generally in scheme, iniaves,
programs etc. launched by Government
Department/Ministry and various
bodies- they play. e.g. They oen play
here – and in environment secon – they
tend to play it more.

See this queson of 2017. Here, the

name of instuon is wrong. So, if you
are able to eliminate 2, you can easily
reach the answer (a). UPSC plays at these
places
6 You should be cauous with certain type
of statements – like – say This
term/provision is defined under the
constuon or according to the
provisions of the constuon. Be
cauous with such statements. UPSC
tend to play here.

See this queson of UPSC 2020.

The answer is d.

It has used the statement – defines,

provides etc – Generally UPSC plays with
these words in Polity secon.

7 Many mes, UPSC flips/interchange the
concepts. Or they change the facts. You
need to be cauous with such
statements.

See this queson number 1 of year 2019.

Here, simply the Jagirdar and Zamindar
differences has been interchanged. So, be
cauous with such statements.

Answer is d.

8 The statements such as connuous

increase, connuous decrease, steadily
increase, steadily decrease etc are
generally wrong.

e.g. see this queson of Year 2020.

The first statement is wrong –

consistently increase.

The third statement is wrong – an

extreme statement.

So, answer is b.

Be cauous with such statements.

9 The statements which say that the two
people are contemporary are generally
wrong. Be cauous with the terms while
solving it
e.g. See a queson of year 2019. Opon
1 is wrong definitely. Be cauous with
such opons. So, you have 50 percent
probability to do it correctly.
The correct answer is d

10 Statements that tend to avoid extreme

words are more likely to be correct. They
talk about the possibilies. These
statements may contain the keywords
such as ‘some, may/might, many, more,
less, one of the, someme, more oen
than not, much etc’.

Let us understand it with an example.

The queson has been picked from Year
2021

Here, statement 2 is talking about

possibility – some – not an extreme
statement. Most likely it should be right.

JOIN ME AT TELEGRAM – UPSC PRELIMS WITH NEELESH ©Copyright NEELESH KUMAR SINGH (AIR 442 UPSC CSE 2021) For Queries – Whatsapp –
9310161970 Website – neeleshair442.com (Our other iniave – Sociology, Ethics and Essay, CSAT)
Statement 3 is also talking about
possibility – can – most likely it should be
right.
So, the right answer should be either (b)
or (d).
If you can take a chance.

Alternately – if you know properly – that

it is not nave to South East Asia, you can
straight reach the answer b.

11 A statement that has the word

can/may/might etc – they are generally
right. Remember, they talk about the
probability or the possibilies. There are
maximum chances that they will be right.
e.g. see this queson of 2021

Here, see the statement 3. Here, it is

saying the government ‘can’. So, it is a
possibility – a correct statement, any
opon you choose must have opon 3 in
it.

Further, statement 1 is an extreme

statement – use of word ‘All’. So, it can be
eliminated.

So, here the correct answer can be

reached to be (b) which is the right
answer

12 Statements which are hard to
prove/disprove are most likely to be
correct. This is because there is sll
research going on to prove/disprove
such statements. Remember, As I always
say, UPSC is looking for a generalist and
not a specialist. Let us understand it with
an example.

See this queson of 2021.

There is only the limited research on the
seafloor in internaonal water and it is
ongoing. So, it is actually hard to disprove
it.
So, answer will include statement 3.

Further, remember the rule of instuon.

Statement is incorrect. So, the right
answer is b.

13 In the quesons involving technology in
different fields/areas of life, generally
the applicaons which are given are
correct.
See the queson asked in 2020

Here all opons are correct. It is asking

for applicaon.
But remember, logic will work only when
you will use it logically.

14 You can also make use of etymology – i.e.

names to reach the right answer. i.e.
there is some reason generally behind
naming anything. Hence, you can break
the complex term asked by UPSC into its
root terms and then understand the
meaning of root terms to reach the
answer. See this queson asked in 2022.

Qubit = Qu + bit
It is beyond the bits – which were used in
the classical computers and even which
we are using. A, c and d are based
generally on the classical applicaon but
Qu gives the bit a significant meaning and
hence, the answer is (b). But it will work
only – if your basics are fine with the
understanding of bits.

Many mes, even you can solve locaon
quesons – since a place name – is
generally affected by the locality/local
language e.g. Say - Bharatnatyam – this
word itself shows – atleast – it does not
belong to northern part of India. So, like
this – somemes – knowledge of words
might help.
15 Many mes, when the given opons are
similar, generally one of them is correct.
This examiner does this to confuse the
future officers.
Let us see a queson of 2020

Here, two opons are similar – c and d.

The right answer is d.
