WEEKS
1-2 Fitness For a Better Lifestyle
Lesson
I
After this lesson you are expected to do the following:
• identify the different components of Physical Fitness;
• monitor one’s progress towards fitness goal; and
• analyze the effects of exercise and physical activity participation on
fitness.

Physical Fitness
Physical fitness is a state of health and well-being. More
specifically, it is the ability to perform aspects of sports, occupations and
daily activities. Physical fitness is generally achieved through proper
nutrition, moderate-vigorous physical exercise, and sufficient rest.
Physical strength is the measure of a human's exertion of force on
physical objects. Increasing physical strength is the goal of strength
training. Weakness is a lack of physical or muscle strength and the
feeling that extra effort is required to move your arms, legs, or other
muscles.

Formula to get you Body Mass Index (BMI)

BMI = Weight (in kilogram) Classification

Height (in meter)2
18.5 & below Underweight

BMI = 35 kg 18.6 Normal

(1.2) (1.2) m2
25—29.9 Overweight
BMI = 35 kg
1.44 m2 30.0 & above Obese

BMI = 24.30/ Normal

PIVOT 4A CALABARZON P.E. G7 6

Classification of BMI serves as the basis of an individual to identify
and analyze their health status related to their lean body mass (height,
weight). It can be used also in planning and choosing their physical
activity to engage in. An underweight individual must be encouraged to
achieve the recommended BMI according to their age, and must engage in
physical activity. The individual that belongs to the normal classification
should maintain their eating habits and involve themselves in their
respective choice of activities. On the other hand the overweight and obese
individual should be aware of their eating habits and also encourage to
physical activities.

9 PIVOT 4A CALABARZON P.E. G7

The components of physical fitness are separated into numerous
categories, each of which is unique to each individual. These aspects of
physical fitness can be taught to anyone in order to improve their abilities
or performance in various activities. You may make the improvements
you want in your fitness, mental health, and lifestyle by focusing on
certain components.

Physical fitness components are divided into two major categories.

First is Health-Related Components (HR) that serve as a contributing
factor of an individual. These are divided into 5 subcomponents; the
cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance,
flexibility and body coordination. These subcomponents comprise the
health of an individual and can be enhanced by eating healthy diets and
a maintaining good lifestyle. The other major category of Physical fitness
is the Skill Related Components (SRC). These define how an individual
can do a certain task in his daily routine. These components can also be
used in invidious recreational activities like dance and sports. The Skill
related components consist of 6 subcomponents namely, Agility, Power,
Balance, Speed, Coordination and Reaction Time.

PIVOT 4A CALABARZON P.E. G7 10

Physical Activity VS Exercise and their Benefits
During the 1st and 2nd grading period of the school year you were
asked to perform a physical fitness test. In line with this you also
identified the different components under the 2 major categories of
physical fitness. First the Health-Related Components (HRC) with sub-
components of Cardiovascular endurance, Flexibility, Muscular Strength,
Muscular Endurance and Body Coordination. On the other hand, the Skill
Related Components (SRC) is composed of different subcomponents like
Power, Agility, Speed, Balance, Reaction Time and Coordination.

Physical fitness is a state of health and well-being, specifically, the

ability to perform aspects of sports, occupations and daily activities.
Physical fitness is generally achieved through proper nutrition, moderate-
vigorous physical exercise, and sufficient rest. Physical strength is the
measure of a human's exertion of force on physical objects. Increasing
physical strength is the goal of strength training. Weakness is a lack of
physical or muscle strength and the feeling that extra effort is required to
move your arms, legs, or other muscles

Learning Task 4: Select and copy the activities that you perform in your
daily lives. Write your answer on your answer sheet.
 Taking the stairs instead of elevators and or escalators
 Walking at least 30 minutes a day
 Running or jogging
 Doing household chores
 Dancing
 Swimming
 Cycling
 Washing Car by hand
 Gardening
 Aerobics

11 PIVOT 4A CALABARZON P.E. G7

Learning Task 5: Copy and complete the table below. On the first
column you’re going to write all the physical activities that you can do
well and on the second column write the different activities that you
think you can’t perform well. Write your answer on your answer sheet.

My Strengths My Weaknesses

Answer the following question.

1. How will you evaluate your physical strength and your physical
weakness? Explain?
2. Can you easily identify your strength? If yes why?
3. During this quarantine period, what is the physical activity that helps
you to be physically fit?

Always remember that every person is unique. You might have

some strengths but can be the weakness of others. On the other hand
you might have some weaknesses that might be the strength of others.

These activities can enhance the physical fitness and involvement of

an individual various scenarios. Some of us involve ourselves in different
activities according to our preferences. In line with the capability and
ability of an individual must also be considered in choosing activities that
we want to involve in. As the saying goes, “Every person is unique” , this
quotation proves to us that the ability of a person might not be the same
as to others.

In this part of the module, you will understand the relationship of

Body Mass Index (BMI) in performing various tasks. Kindly go back into
the different activities that you listed. These tasks complies to both
PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES and EXERCISE. These two actions can enhance
the capability of an individual holistically. On the other hand, you might
ask what is the difference between the two. Physical Activities is bodily
movement produces by skeletal muscles. It requires energy expenditures
and produce progressive health benefits. It requires only a low to
moderate intensity of effort. By contrast, it implies a level of activity that
is lower than required to maintain good health. Exercise is a type of
physical activity that requires planned, structured, & repetitive bodily
movement to improve or maintain one or more components of physical
fitness. It is usually viewed as an activity that requires a vigorous-
intensity effort.

PIVOT 4A CALABARZON P.E. G7 12

These are the examples of physical activities according to the definition
above:

• Taking the stairs instead of elevators and or escalators

• Doing household chores
• Dancing
• Gardening
• Washing car by hand

These are the example of exercises according to the definition above.

• Walking
• Running
• Aerobics
• Swimming
• Cycling

One of the many benefits of regular physical activity and exercise is the sig-
nificantly reduced risks for developing heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, colon
and breast cancers, high blood pressures, osteoporotic fractures. It is also important
for healthy muscles, bones, joints and it seems to lessen symptoms of depression
and anxiety, improve mood, and enhance ones’ ability to perform daily tasks.

Festival Dance
A festival is an event ordinarily celebrated by a community and
centering of its characteristics, religion or culture. It is often marked as a
local or national holiday. Festival dances are cultural dances performed
with the strong beats of percussion instruments by a community of
people sharing the same culture usually done in honor of a Patron saint
or as a thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest. Festival dances may be
religious or secular in nature.
The majority of festivals in the Philippines, locally known as
"fiestas", may have their own peryas (trade fairs with temporary
amusement parks). The origin of most early fiestas are rooted in
Christianity, dating back to the Spanish colonial period. Many
communities (such as barrios and towns) of the predominantly Catholic
Philippines almost always had a respective patron saint. Originally
encouraged by the Spanish to coincide with Christian holidays days, early
patronal festivals became vital instruments in spreading Christianity
throughout the country.
PIVOT 4A CALABARZON P.E. G7 22
Festivals in the Philippines can be religious, cultural, or both.
Several of these are held to honor the local Roman Catholic patron saint,
to commemorate local history and culture, to promote the community's
products, or to celebrate a bountiful harvest. They can be marked by Holy
Masses, processions, parades, theatrical play and re-enactments,
religious or cultural rituals, trade fairs, exhibits, concerts, pageants and
various games and contests. However, festivals in the country are not
limited to Christian origins. Many festivals also focus on Islamic or
indigenous concepts. There are more than 42,000 known major and
minor festivals in the Philippines, the majority of which are in the
barangay (village) level. Due to the thousands of town, city, provincial,
national, and village fiestas in the country, the Philippines has
traditionally been known as the Capital of the World's Festivities.

Nature of Festival Dances 5-8
Lesson

I
Filipinos are known to be fun-loving and health-conscious people.
Activities that can help a person improve his physical fitness can be seen
in colorful festival and street dances. These dances are performed by
people from various walks of life for entertainment, fun and festivity
purposes giving priority to personal fitness plus the success of winning a
competition.

WHY FESTIVALS?
Festival dances are cultural dances performed with the strong beats
of percussion instruments by a community of people sharing the same
culture usually done in honor of a Patron Saint or as thanksgiving for a
bountiful harvest.
Festival dances may be religious or secular in nature. Festival dances
depict the people’s culture by portraying the ways of life through
movements, costumes and acts representing in their place of origin.

NATURE OF FESTIVAL DANCES.

CULTURAL WITH RELIGIOUS INFLUENCE:
These are characterized by movements showing reverence to a
religious icon that is believed to have interceded in their personal life. In
the Philippines where majority of people are Catholics, are celebrated
fiestas pompously and with so much gaiety. For the Filipinos, this
celebration is an expression of thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest and
for a favor or request granted to them through divine intercession.

INDIGENEOUS INFLUENCE/NON-RELIGIOUS FESTIVAL

We have religious celebrations, but we also have cultural
celebrations that are similar to religious celebrations.
In the Philippines, there are a number of non-religious festivals that focus
on our country's cultural and heritage aspects and are celebrated with
enthusiasm and passion. Tourists even join in the festivities with the
locals, taking in the amazing and artistic value of the costumes and props
that the locals have created.

an important element of
parish life. One church's feast

dance that acts as a sort of
prayer for couples wanting to
have a child. In addition from
May 17 to 19 each year San
Pascual Baylon Church hosts
a three-day feast that attracts
people from all over the
country to attend mass. Many
people are visiting the city
after hearing stories of
couples longing to have a
child who eventually was
granted after attending the
feast dancing.

(Flowers of May). It is the seasons for
the Catholof festival—Flores de Mayo. It
involves daily flower offerings to the
Virgin Mary, also known as the Queen of
May. There is also a colorful procession
through the towns and cities.

The culmination of the month-

long event, Santacruzan, can be defined
as a religious-historical beauty contest.
It honor of Saint Helena and her son
Constantine, who became the first
Christian Roman Emperor. It is held to
remember the discovery of the Holy
Cross, which is believed to have been
made by Saint Helena. The purpose of
the parades is to re-enact both the search for the Holy Cross and the
celebrations that followed its discovery in Jerusalem.
