1. The Temptation of Jesus

In Matthew and Luke "the tempter" or "the

devil" tempts Jesus to:

his own hunger App: Canva
● Leap from a pinnacle and rely on
angels to break his fall. Link:

own gratification. The first temptation nt=DAE6AvQ4EEc
enticed him to use them for his own &utm_campaign=d
purposes. Jesus’ response is that he lives for esignshare&utm_
the father and trusts in him. Trust in God can medium=link&utm
be misused too and so the tempter takes him _source=sharebutt
to the pinnacle of the temple. There is a false on
trust which attempts to manipulate God for
one's own purposes and trade on his care. It
was an attempt to blackmail God. "All right, I
trust you, save me if I jump."
The final temptation is to replace God with a
creature. In human experience, the
idolization of things brings an endless litany
of suffering and despair. Here again, Jesus is
emphatic. Only God can command our total
loyalty. The temptation scene is a picture of
the whole of Jesus’ life and affirms his
commitment to his Father’s will right down to
the end.

2. Management of Emotions

“Emotions make our lives exciting, unique,

and vibrant,” Botnick says. “Strong feelings
can signify that we embrace life fully, that
we’re not repressing our natural reactions.”

It’s perfectly normal to experience some

emotional overwhelm on occasion— when
something wonderful happens, when
something terrible happens, when you feel
like you’ve missed out. So, how do you know
when there’s a problem? Emotions that
regularly get out of hand might lead to:
● relationship or friendship conflict
● difficulty relating to others
● trouble at work or school
● an urge to use elements to help
manage your emotions.
● physical or emotional outbursts

Accepting emotions as they come to help you

get more comfortable with them. Growing
your comfort around intense emotions allows
you to fully feel them without reacting in
excitement. To practice accepting emotions,
try thinking of them as messengers. They’re
not “good” or “bad.” They’re neutral. Maybe
they bring up unpleasant feelings sometimes,
but they’re still giving you important
information that you can use.

Meditation can help you upturn your

awareness of all feelings and experiences.
When you meditate, you’re teaching yourself
to sit with those feelings, to notice them
without judging yourself or attempting to
change them or make them go away.

3. The “lead us not into temptation”

in the prayer “Our Father”
(Discernment and Decision)

The life of Jesus shows us that victory in the

battle of temptation can become possible only
through prayer. The 'Our Father' therefore
becomes a tool against sin, which results
from our consenting to temptation.

We must not forget then that these are the

words Jesus gives us, 'Lead us not into
temptation. By asking the Father not to 'lead'
us into temptation we are asking a twofold
reality to come about: both 'do not allow us to
enter into temptation' and 'do not let us yield
to temptation'. The letter of James reminds
us that 'God cannot be tempted and he
himself tempts no one (1:13). God wills for us
to be free from evil. It is our own desire that
allows temptation to surface, therefore we ask
him not to allow us to take the way that leads
to sin.

The plea, therefore, 'Lead us not into

temptation' from this most powerful of
prayers, implies that we need to make a
decision of the heart with the assistance of
the Holy Spirit. But if the feeling of
temptation is too much for me, why does a
loving God the Father enable me to feel
weighed down with temptation? Again we
must remind ourselves what Scripture says...
'No testing has overtaken you that is not
common to man. God is faithful, and he will
not let you be tempted beyond your strength,
but with the temptation will also provide the
way of escape, so that you may be able to
endure it (1 Cor 10:13).
