Tips
Each information in the Formal Invitation should be in a separate line.
• Name (s) of the host (s) making/sending the invitation
• The expressions usually used are - ‘feel privileged to invite’, ‘inviting you to grace the occasion’, ‘feel
honoured to invite you’.
• The reason for the invitation
• The time, date, and venue of the occasion
• In case a VIP is to be invited to grace the occasion or event, (at an official function) mention his/her
name and designation/position

the Chief Minister of Delhi requesting her to be the Chief Guest on this occasion. (50 words)

FORMAL CARD INVITATIONS FORMAT


SAMPLE
1. M/s Shyam Lai & Sons are opening a new general store ‘Galaxy Novelties’ in Geetanjali
Enclave, Dwarika, Delhi. The inauguration ceremony is fixed for Sunday, the 19th of October
20XX at 11 a.m. Prepare a draft of formal invitation letter for the purpose.
2. St. Anne’s School is inviting parents to the inauguration of their Junior Wing on 6th August in
the school campus. Draft an invitation in 50 words, including all necessary details.

1. Your sister Nivedita is going to marry Akhilesh (S/o Mr & Mrs SM. Joshi, Nainital) Your father
Mr K.S. Bhardwaj has planned to hold the wedding at Hotel Kunal, New Delhi on 25 May 20XX
at 8 p.m. Write a formal invitation on behalf of Mr & Mrs K.S. Bhardwaj inviting guests to the
auspicious occasion. Give other details. Do not exceed 50 words.
2. You are a student of Newton Public School, Nagpur. The school is holding its annual function on
Saturday, the 15th November, 20XX at 11 a.m. The HRD Minister Dr M.M. Joshi has consented
to be the chief guest. Design an invitation card to be sent to the parents and other invitees. Do not
exceed 50 words.
3. You are the Principal of Zodiac Senior Secondary School, Ooty. The school has completed 25
years of its meritorious services to society. The Silver Jubilee Celebrations are to be held on
Sunday, the 26th October, 20XX. Mrs M. Kamath, the founder Principal will preside. Draft a
suitable invitation to be sent to important dignitaries of the city and the parents of students.
INFORMAL INVITATION
 It is written in the first person (I/we).
 The sender’s address is written as usual but the receiver’s address is not mentioned.
 The date of writing the invitation can be given but there is no need to write the year.
 The salutation is Dear + name.
 The complimentary close is ‘Yours sincerely’.
 Various tenses of the verb are used unlike the formal invitation.
 The invitation does not ask for a reply as in the formal invitation. However, it is polite to reply to the
invitation.
 The vocabulary is less formal, but never too informal.

1: Mr and Mrs. G Joseph of 27, The Apple Tree Orchard, Kottayam, have decided to have a party on the
occasion of the twenty-first birthday of their son, Vineet. Write the invitation giving details of the date,
time and venue. Do not exceed 50 words.

2. You are Leena Sen. The wedding of your elder sister Reena Sen is going to be held on the 15th May,
20XX at Hotel Lake View, Udaipur. Write out an informal invitation to your friend Vinnie requesting her to
attend the function.
