Learning & Inspirational Moments (Jun 07):

About Mistakes
Hi Everyone,

Another month just flew by so quickly. Sorry for the late "Learning &
Inspirational Moments" from Jimmy. Came back from Shanghai 2 weeks back
and I spent most of my last week in HTA conducting training session for our
basic trainees. It was a "renewing" experience for me. However, to pay for the
price of that "renewal", I had to come in on Saturday to clear some work...Ha Ha...
As the saying goes, everything has a price.

2. This month, I would like to share some insightful paras from one of my
favourite book "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" by Stephen R. Covey. The
following paras are extracted from pg. 91. If you have the book, read it!

3. Our behaviour is governed by principles. Living in harmony with them

brings positive consequences; violating them bring negative consequences. We
are free to choose our response in any situation, but in doing so, we choose the
attendant consequence. " When we pick up one end of the stick, we pick up
the other."

4. Undoubtedly, there have been times in each of our lives when we picked
up what we later felt was the wrong stick. Our choices have brought
consequences we would rather have lived without. If we had the choice to make
over again, we would make it differently. We call these choices mistakes, and
these "mistakes" merit out deeper thought.

5. For those filled with regret, perhaps the most useful exercise is to learn
from them and move on. We can't recall mistakes, we can't undo them, we
can't control the consequences that came as a result. The best way to a mistake
is to acknowledge it instantly, correct and learn from it. This literally turns a failure
into a success. "Success," said IBM founder T.J. Watson, "is on the far side
of failure."

6. But not to acknowledge a mistake, not to correct it and learn from it,
is a mistake of a different order. It usually puts a person on a self-deceiving,
self-justifying path, often involving rationalisation to self and to others.
Sometimes people attempt to cover up the mistakes which causes far deeper
injury to self!

7. It is not what others do or even our own mistakes that hurt us the
most; it is our response to those things. Chasing after the poisonous snake
that bites us will only drive the poison through our entire system. It is far
better to take measures immediately to get the poison out.

8. Our response to any mistake affects the quality of the next moment.
It is important to immediately admit and correct our mistakes so that they
have no power over the next moment and we are empowered again.

9. I hope Jimmy's June's Learning and Inspirational moments will help you to
reflect deeply on the topic on "mistakes."

10. Until the next Learning and Inspirational moments at the end of July,
chow :)

Have a great day ahead!
