CLASS-XI
ASSIGNMENT- APPLIED MATHS (2023-24)

PROBABILITY

1. A coin is tossed. If it shows head, we draw a ball from a bag containing 3 blue and 4
white balls, if it shows a tail, we throw a die. Describe the sample space of the
experiment.

2. Suppose 3 bulbs are selected at random from a lot. Each bulb is tested and classified as
defective(D) or non-defective (N). Write the sample space of this experiment.

3. A die is rolled. Let E be the event ‘die shows 4’ and F be the event that ‘die shows even
number’. Are the events E and F mutually exclusive? ( no)

4. A coin and a die are tossed. Describe the sample space and the following events :
(i) A = getting a head and an even number (ii) B= getting a prime
number
(iii) C = getting a tail and an odd number (iv)D = getting a head or a
tail
Now answer the following questions :
(a) Are A and B mutually exclusive? (b) Are A and C mutually
exclusive ?
(c) Are A and C exhaustive? (d) Are A and D exhaustive?
(Ans: (a)no (b)yes (c)yes (d)yes)

5. In a school, there are 1000 students, out of which 430 are girls. It is known that out of
the 430, 10% of the girls study in class XII. What is the probability that a student chosen
randomly studies in class XII given that the chosen student is a girl? (0.1)

6. In a certain school 20% of the students failed in English, 15% of the students failed in
Mathematics and 10% of the students failed in both English and Mathematics. A student
is selected at random. If he passed in English, what is the probability that he also passed
in Mathematics?(15/16)

7. A purse contains 4 silver and 5 copper coins. A second purse contains 3 silver and 7
copper coins. If a coin is taken out at random from one of the purses, what is the
probability that it is a copper coin?(113/180)

8. An urn contains 3 red and 5 black balls. A ball is drawn at random, its color is noted and
is returned to the urn. Moreover, 2 additional balls of the color noted down are put in the
urn and then two balls are drawn at random (without replacement) from the urn. Find
the probability that both the balls drawn are of red color. (1/8)
9. Suppose 5% of men and 0.25% of women have grey hairs. A grey-haired person is
selected at random. What is the probability of this person being male? Assume that there
are equal number of males and females.(20/21)

10. It is known that 60% students in a college reside in hostel remaining 40% are day
scholars. 30% of all students who reside in hostel attain A grade and 20% of day scholars
attain A grade. If one randomly chosen student has A grade , then what is the probability
that he lives in the hostel? (9/13)
