Asych Activity 3
Polarity of Molecules

Important Notes:
Ionic Bond - the atoms involved are combination of metal and nonmetal
Covalent Bond - the atoms involved are both nonmetals or combinations of metalloid
and nonmetal.

Direction: Determine whether the compound below is an ionic or covalent

compound. Write IC if it is an ionic compound and CC if it is a covalent
compound.

1. NaCl - IC
2. CO2 - CC
3. CaCl2 - IC
4. CCl4 - CC
5. Fe2O2 - IC
6. N2O - CC
7. PCl5 - IC
8. KBr - IC
9. HCl - CC
10. AlCl3 - IC
Part II. Define the following important terms.
1. Ionic compounds
- Ionic compounds are compounds composed of ions held together by
electrostatic forces of attraction.
2. Covalent compound
- A covalent compound is a compound formed by the sharing of electrons
between atoms.
3. Polarity
- Polarity refers to the distribution of electrical charge within a molecule. A
molecule is polar if it has an uneven distribution of electrons, resulting in
regions of partial positive and partial negative charges.
4. Atoms
- Atoms are the basic units of matter and the smallest identifiable unit of an
element. They consist of a nucleus containing protons and neutrons,
surrounded by electrons in energy levels or orbitals.
5. Molecules
- Molecules are groups of atoms held together by chemical bonds, either
covalent or ionic. They are the smallest units of compounds that retain the
chemical properties of that compound.
6. Lone Pair
- A lone pair refers to a pair of valence electrons that are not involved in
bonding with other atoms. These electrons are typically depicted as dots
in Lewis structures and contribute to the shape and properties of
molecules.
7. Electronegativity
- Electronegativity is a measure of an atom's ability to attract and hold onto
electrons in a chemical bond. It is a property that varies among different
elements and influences the type of bond formed between atoms (ionic or
covalent).
8. Polar Bond
- A polar bond is a covalent bond between atoms with different
electronegativities, resulting in an uneven distribution of electron density.
9. Non-Polar Bond
- A nonpolar bond is a covalent bond between atoms with similar
electronegativities, resulting in an even distribution of electron density.
10. Molecular Geometry
- Molecular geometry refers to the three-dimensional arrangement of atoms
in a molecule.
