Over the past century, numerous medical breakthroughs have revolutionized our understanding of the
endocrine system, leading to significant advancements in healthcare and enhancing our ability to diagnose
and treat various conditions. Let's explore some key breakthroughs that have shaped the field.
Hormone Discovery: One of the early breakthroughs occurred in the 1920s with the discovery of insulin
by Sir Frederick Banting and Charles Best. This hormone, produced by the pancreas, plays a crucial role
in regulating blood sugar levels. The isolation and use of insulin transformed the lives of individuals with
diabetes, allowing them to manage their condition effectively.
Thyroid Hormones and Iodine Deficiency: In the mid-20th century, scientists uncovered the importance
of iodine in thyroid function. The development of iodized salt helped address widespread iodine deficiency,
preventing thyroid-related disorders. This breakthrough significantly improved public health globally.
Growth Hormone Therapy: The synthesis of growth hormone in the laboratory during the 1980s
revolutionized the treatment of growth disorders in children. Recombinant DNA technology enabled the
production of synthetic growth hormone, providing a safe and effective solution for individuals with growth
hormone deficiencies.

6. Positive vs. Negative Feedback: Identify if the following are describing positive feedback or
negative feedback. [ 7 marks]
A. ________________________ regulated by opposing hormones. One hormone may raise the level of a
particular chemical or action while the other hormone lowers the level of the chemical or action.
B. ________________________ the rise in blood glucose levels triggers the pancreatic release of insulin.
Insulin causes blood glucose levels to drop, which signals the pancreas to stop producing insulin.
C. ________________________ the release of the hormone or the activity causes an increase in the
production of the hormone.

The A1C test is a blood test that provides information about your average levels of blood glucose, also
called blood sugar, over the past 3 months. The A1C test can be used to diagnose type 2 diabetes and
prediabetes.1 The A1C test is also the primary test used for diabetes management.
Figure 1. Blood glucose (mg/dL) measurements were taken four times per day (fasting or pre-
breakfast, pre-lunch, pre-dinner, and bedtime).

*Any test used to diagnose diabetes requires confirmation with a second measurement, unless there are
clear symptoms of diabetes.
