 During World War II in Great Britain, John Randall and H.A.H.

Boots were
working to make radars better. They wanted to make a very precise(pontos)
radar that could be taken on planes to help pilots detect and destroy enemy
planes and submarines at night.
 They invented an electron tube called a “magnetron” that made the new radar
possible. After the war, Dr. Percy Spencer, an engineer was experimenting with
the magnetron. He noticed that the candy bar(csoki) in his pocket had
melted(elolvadt).
 Spencer placed some popcorn(kukorica) near the megatron and they
popped(kisult). An egg exploded when put near it.
 Spencer made a metal box into which he fed the microwaves. He developed his
invention. The first commercial microwave was tested in 1946 in a restaurant in
Boston.

 In 1947 the first microwaves was put(kidobtak a piacra) on the market. They
cost $5,000 and weighed(sulya annyi volt) over 750 pounds.

 After many years of development by 1976, 60 percent of American families had

a microwave. Today almost everybody has a microwave. We can’t imagine living
without one.
