1) Consider an elemental block subject to 5

uniaxial tension (see Fig. P1). Derive
approximate expressions for the
change of volume per unit volume due
to this loading.
For the special case of a solid
subjected to uniform hydrostatic
pressure p, σ x =σ y =σ z =– p . Derive

approximate expressions for the bulk modulus or modulus of volume expansion of the material.

2) Consider a steel tube surrounding a solid aluminum cylinder, the

assembly being compressed between rigid cover plates by centrally
applied forces as shown in Fig. P2. The aluminum cylinder is 8 cm in
diameter and the outside diameter of the steel tube is 9.2 cm. If P = 200
kN, find the stress in the steel and also in the aluminum. For steel, E =
200 GPa and for aluminum E = 80 GPa.

4) A 0.4-m by 0.4-m square ABCD is drawn on a thin

panel or flat plate of an aircraft prior to loading.
Subsequent to loading, the square has the dimentions
shown by dashed lines in Fig. P4. Find: The average
values of strain components at A?
