EUTHANASIA – RIGHT TO DIE WITH DIGNITY

unfortunately, there are people out there who are suffering from a long term illness or injury and
find death to be their ultimate solution. They are in so much pain and suffering that they no
longer find their quality of life to be at an acceptable level. Euthanasia means good death . it is
defined as ending the life of a patient to prevent further sufferings. Euthanasia is an activity which
involves several ethical, human rights, social, economic, moral, religious, spiritual and legal
factors.

Euthanasia is of two types – Active euthanasia and passive euthanasia. Active euthanasia means
intentional act to deliberately kill an ill patient whereas passive euthanasia happens when medical
treatment is removed purposefully resulting in persons death to prevent sufferings.

Euthanasia is illegal in most countries except few countries such as Netherlands,

Belgium ,Canada,Spain etc. Active Euthanasia is illegal in India as it goes against article 21,
which advocates for “Right to live”. But, in a landmark judgement, the Supreme Court of India
legalized passive euthanasia in 2018, stating that it was a matter of 'living will'.

Unfortunately, Euthanasia has also been misused to lead some serious organized crimes.
