Dear fellow teacher,

I would like to introduce you to a fun and educational writing activity for your entire class called “The
Great Canadian Mail Race”. I am a grade 6 teacher from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Please keep it going
around our beautiful country. If you are not interested, please pass this on to another teacher.

This is how it works:

1. Read my student’s letter to your class.

2. Have one of your students respond to my student by writing back to our class.
3. Have all of your students in your class write a letter to any grade 6 student in Canada.
4. The students can choose the town or city that they would like to write to.
5. Some of the students may choose a past school or a specific person from a different school.
6. Address the envelope as follows:

Grade 6 Class
Name of School
Address
Name of city or town
Postal Code

When sending the letters, place a copy of the letter similar to this one, with each of your student’s
letters.

This is the race part! The student who gets the quickest reply is the winner of the race in your class.

I hope your students will participate. My class loves this activity every year and they were all excited to
send their letters to other students throughout Canada! Most of my students started writing these
letters last month but we have held off sending them until now. Some of the students may have
addressed their letters with minor mistakes or may have spelling/grammar errors. Is so, please feel free
to use their letter for an editing lesson as a class.

Looking forward to hearing from you and your students.

Sincerely,

Kyle Lichtenwald
