PROBABILITY

DISTRIBUTION FOR A
DISCRETE RANDOM
VARIABLE AND ITS
PROPERTIES

INSPIRED BY
The probability distribution of a
random variable defines the
probability of each possible value of
the random variable. Its distribution
functions are concentrated as a mass
for a particular value, and also
known as a Probability Mass
Function.
Properties of discrete
probability distribution
The probability of each value of the random
variable must be between or equal to 0 and 1. In
symbol 0 P (X) 1.

The sum of all values of the random variable must

be equal to 1. In symbol, we write it as P(X)=1
Supposed three coins are
tossed. Let X be the random
Example 1 variable representing the
number of heads. Construct the
probability distribution and
draw the histogram

2.
P(X) 1/8 3/8 1/2 0

P(X)= 1/8 + 3/8 + 1/2 + 0

= 4/8 + 1/2
= 1/2 + 1/2 = 1

P(X) 0.06 0.23 __ 0.35 0.05

A. find P(2)= B. find P(X 3)=

C. find P(X 2= D. find P(1 X 3)

Example 2
X 0 1 2 3 4
P(X) 0.06 0.23 __ 0.35 0.05
A. find P(2)= .31
B. find P(X 3)=
P(X)=1
= P (3)+ P(4)
.06 + .23 + .35 + .05 = 1
= 0.35 + 0.05
K+ .69=1
K = 1- .69 = .31 P(X 3)= 0.40
Example 2
X 0 1 2 3 4

0.31 0.35 0.05
A. find P(2)= .31
B. find P(X 3)=
P(X)=1
.06 + .23 + .35 + .05 = 1
K+ .69=1
K = 1- .69 = .31

P(X 2)= 0.29

D. find P(1 X 3)
C. find P(X 2)= P(0) + P(1)
