NARROW BEE FLY

Narrow bee fly is commonly known as Nairobi fly, also called the Kenya fly and they live mainly
in East Africa.
CHARACTERISTICS
 They neither sting nor bite its victim.
 They are black and red in colour.
 They live in moist environment.
 They are attracted to lights, and as a result, inadvertently come into contact with
humans.

IMPORTANCE
-They are often beneficial to agriculture because they will eat crop pests.

EFFECTS
Can causes burns to the skin and itching.
- A potent toxin that causes blistering which can cause chemical burns if it comes into contact
with skin due to the juicy liquid that has been released.
-The toxin is released when the beetle is crushed against the skin, often at night, when sleepers
unknowingly brush the insect from their faces.
-After 24-48 hours of crushing it to the skin rushes start to occur. And it can take several weeks
to disappear.

IF THE BEETLES ARE FOUND ON YOUR SKIN


 Don’t try to kill the fly.
 Flick/blow away the fly gently.

TREATMENT INCLUDES:

 Clean the area with soap and water.


 Place a cold cloth-covered ice pack over the bite to reduce swelling and minimize
irritation (muwasho) and pain.
 Possibly treating with antibiotics
