DATA2210 - 2022/2023 Syllabus

Course Information

Course Name Business Analytics and Data Visualization

Business insights developed through descriptive analytics have


transformed and are key to evidence-informed decision making and
efficiencies. In this course, students gain skills by completing analytics
projects introducing design principles for creating meaningful displays of

analytics, including data analysis and data visualization. This focus is
comprised of understanding, manipulating, evaluating, and presenting
the many complex data and information streams that drive today’s
businesses and organizations.

Assessments / Evaluation

(Peer Academic Support) (Weighting 5%)

Date: Throughout the term

Details: An academic support community is where you can seek advice or answers from your peers.
“Community” implies that you can also provide academic support to your peers,

You are expected to


o Ask questions if you have any, or
o Share and Discuss some of your "light bulb" - learning moments, or
o Help your peers to solve some of the questions posted, or
o Propose changes to the curriculum.
Your contributions will be recognized with a maximum of FIVE points(5%) towards your final
course grade.

(Discussion Forums) (Weighting 10%)


Date: Due at 23:55 on the Sunday of the week specified in the course plan or at the instructor’s
discretion.

Details: Students will collaborate on and discuss the topics posed. Discussion activities are set up to
engage students to more fully explore, evaluate, and broaden their understanding of the
current topic. Even though there is a 10% weight assigned, these discussions are designed to
provide students with feedback on their understanding of the topic via interaction with both
their peers and their instructor. Note that it will be mandatory to utilize ChatGPT / ChatGPT-
4 for all discussions.

(Assignments) (Weighting 15%)


Date: Due at 23:55 on the Sunday of the week specified in the course plan or at the instructor’s
discretion.

Details: This activity will allow students to apply relevant concepts to a situation or phenomenon,
analyze ideas and concepts and consider relationships among them, evaluate a decision,
perspective or a particular way of doing something, and create new ideas or perspectives
given a particular topic or issue. Even though there is a 15% weight assigned to the
activities, each assignment is primarily designed to provide students with feedback on their
understanding of the topic via interactions with their instructor.

(Quizzes) (Weighting 15%)

Date: Week 7 and Week 10

Details: Students will demonstrate their competency in using the Tableau Desktop application by
answering a series of questions based on a given data source.

(Term Exams) (Weighting 30%)

Date: Week 6 and Week 12

Details: A term exam will consist of multiple choice, true/false, multiple selection, and open-ended
type questions related to the material in the chapter(s). Even though there is a 30% total
weight assigned to the 2 term exams, they are primarily designed to provide students with
feedback on their understanding of the chapter(s) content as they progress through the
course.

(Term Project) (Weighting 25%)

Date: Key dates for the following components of a comprehensive Term Project are as follows:
o Term Project Proposal: due in Week 10
o Term Project Submission: due in Week 14
o Term Project Presentation: due in Week 14
o Term Project Peer Review: due in Week 15

Details: Visual analytics is the practice of using visualizations to analyze data. For the term project,
students will work in a group of three to four members and create a single-frame or multi-
frame data story that will be shared on Tableau Public. Students are expected to curate data
online, discover the stories within the data, analyze the data, and finally, design a data
visualization to tell the story and be blind reviewed by their peers.

This term project (Submission and Peer Review) phases have two parts, both of which earn
marks.
1. In the first part, you design, write and submit/publish the term project on or before
the due date.
2. In the second part, your group will randomly receive three of your colleagues'
submissions. Your group are required to critique and mark these 3 term projects
online using a structured marking rubric provided.

Marking will be split as follows:

 90% for the assignment by your peers and the instructor


 10% for critiquing and marking the three submissions of your peers
