SELECTED REVIEW PROBLEMS
Instruction: Attempt each of the following
questions
1. Ato Bekele and Woizero Almaz want to save
money for their son’s university fees. They
deposit Birr 7000 in a savings account with an
interest rate of 6.5% per year compounded
annually. How long will it take for this deposit
to double?
(Given log 3=0.4771,log2=0.3010, and
10 0.0274=1.065)
A) 8 years B) between 8 and 9 years
c) 11 years D) 12 years
2. Dagmawi deposits Birr 500 into a savings
account, which earns interest at 6.81% per year
compounded quarterly. How long will it take for
the savings account to have a balance of
Birr 749.77?
A) 5 years B) 6 years C) 7 years D) 8 years
3. Nuhamin invests Birr 80,000 at an interest
rate of 7.5% per annum compounded yearly.
How long will it take for her investment to grow
to Birr100,000?
A) 2 years B) between 3 and 4 years
c) 5 years D) 6 years
4. Bethelhem decides to start saving money for
her son’s future. At the end of each month she
deposits Birr 500 into an account at a Bank,
which earns an interest rate of 5.96%
per annum compounded quarterly.
a) Determine the balance of Bethelhem’s
account after 35 years.
b) How much money did Shelly deposit into her
account over the 35 year period?
c) Calculate how much interest she earned over
the 35 year period.
5. Anna wants to buy a new guitar worth
Birr 7400 in a year’s time. How much must he
deposit at the end of each month into her
savings account, which earns an interest rate
of 9.5% per annum compounded monthly?
6. A manufacturing company makes two models
A and B of a product. Each piece of Model A
requires 9 labour hours for fabricating and
1 labour hour for finishing. Each piece of Model
B requires 12 labour hours for fabricating and
3 labour hours for finishing. For fabricating and
finishing, the maximum labour hours available
are 180 and 30 respectively. The company
makes a profit of Birr 8000 on each piece of
model A and Birr 12000 on each piece of Model
B. How many pieces of Model A and Model B
should be manufactured per week to realize a
maximum profit? What is the maximum profit
per week?
7. A cooperative society of farmers has 50
hectare of land to grow two crops X and Y. The
profit from crops X and Y per hectare are
estimated as Birr 10,500 and Birr 9,000
respectively. To control weeds, a liquid
herbicide has to be used for crops X and Y at
rates of 20 litres and 10 litres per hectare.
Further, no more than 800 litres of herbicide
should be used in order to protect fish and wild
life using a pond which collects drainage from
this land. How much land should be allocated
to each crop so as to maximize the total profit of
the society?
8. A dietician wishes to mix two types of foods
in such a way that vitamin contents of the
mixture contain at least 8 units of vitamin A and
10 units of vitamin C. Food ‘I’ contains
2 units/kg of vitamin A and 1 unit/kg of
vitamin C.Food ‘II’ contains 1 unit/kg of
vitamin A and 2 units/kg of vitamin C. It costs
Birr 50 per kg to purchase Food ‘I’ and Birr 70
per kg to purchase Food ‘II’. Formulate this
problem as a linear programming problem to
minimize the cost of such a mixture.
9. Which one of the following is NOT true?
A) The feasible region is always a convex
region.
B) The maximum (or minimum) solution of the
objective function occurs at the vertex (corner)
of the feasible region.
c) If two corner points produce the same
maximum (or minimum) value of the objective
function, then every point on the line segment
joining these points will also give the same
maximum (or minimum) value.
D) The linear programming problem:
Minimize Z = 3x + 2y
Subject to the constraints:
x + y ≥ 8 ... (1)
3x + 5y ≤ 15 ... (2)
x ≥ 0, y ≥ 0 has feasible solution.

10. Find the Maximum value of

Z = 200 x + 500 y
Subject to the constraints:
x + 2y ≥ 10
3x + 4y ≤ 24
x ≥ 0, y ≥ 0
11.Mamo is paid Birr 35.40 per hour. He can
work for up to 30 hours per week.
a) What is the maximum amount of money he
can earn in a week?
b)How many hours per week should he work if
he wants to earn Birr 991.20?
12.In an examination, 10% of the candidates
were absent. 62% of those who appeared
passed. If 513 candidates failed, how many were
enrolled for the examination?
13.A rectangle has dimensions 15cm by 25cm.
Calculate the percentage increase in the area of
the rectangle after both the length and the width
are increased by 20%.
14. Senay buys 6 packs of biscuits a week, and
each pack costs Birr 5.50. He works 20 hours
a week at a wage of Birr 22.00 per hour. What
percent of his weekly income does Senay spend
on biscuits?
15. Which is the best deal?
a) a 15% discount followed by a 45% discount?
b) a 20% discount followed by a 40% discount?
c) a 10% discount followed by a 50% discount?
