Lesson Topic/Focus Teaching a Folk Song with intermediate rhythms and pitches to 5th-8th grade general
music students through the use of the rote teaching method.
Objective(s) Students will be able to learn and accurately sing the song, Clementine, by the rote
song teaching method.

Song Teaching Method Rote


Procedures 1. The instructor will hand out copies of the sheet music to Clementine to the
students.
2. The students will listen to the instructor sing the phrase “in a cavern, in a
canyon, excavating for a mine.”
3. The students will sing back the phrase “in a cavern, in a canyon, excavating
for a mine.”
4. The students will listen to the instructor sing the phrase “dwelt a miner,
forty niner, and his daughter, Clementine.”
5. The students will sing back the phrase “dwelt a miner, forty niner, and his
daughter, Clementine.”
6. The students will listen to the instructor sing the phrase “oh my darling, oh
my darling, oh my darling Clementine.”
7. The students will sing back the phrase “oh my darling, oh my darling, oh my
darling Clementine.”
8. The students will listen to the instructor sing the phrase “you are lost and
gone forever, dreadful sorry, Clementine.”
9. The students will sing back the phrase “you are lost and gone forever,
dreadful sorry, Clementine.”
10. The students will listen to the instructor sing the entire song.
11. The students and the instructor will sing the entire song together.
12. The students will sing the entire song to the instructor.
Closure Question: What do you notice about the first phrase and the third phrase, as well as
the second phrase and the fourth phrase?

Answer: (in some variance) The first and third phrases contain the same rhythms
and pitches, as well as the second and fourth phrases.
