Learning Objectives:

2. Determine the worth of ideas from a listening text using the CORE criteria
3. Infer ideas from the song listened to
Learning Inputs:
Why are listening skills important? Unfortunately, many of us can only listen just long
enough to form our own responses to what is being said, then we stop listening. Why is that?
Because we have all the information we need to share our own opinion. Needless to say,
this isn’t effective listening, not by a long shot. Listening skills are vital in communication.
Deep down one of our greatest pleasures is feeling understood by another person. We can’t
feel truly understood by another person unless we feel they are really listening to us. But
once we feel that they are, it allows us to open up and share what we want to. We can do
this because the sense of someone seriously listening to us makes us trust the other person.
Nowadays almost everybody owns a gadget. The digital age has indeed taken over our
lives one way or another. We use our phones every single day. From a want to a need,
mobile phones have become part of our daily hustle and bustle, and they amazingly make
our grind a lot easier. One of the apps available for use in a mobile phone is the podcast, an
episodic series of spoken word digital audio files that a mobile user can download to his or
her device for easy listening. Some netizens spend time on podcasts which they subscribed
to. With the availability of such material, subscribers and listeners alike can easily access
some audio files. However, not everything that they can get from the audio is worth listening
to. It is a must that listeners know how to determine the worth of the ideas mentioned in the
podcast that they listen to.
Below is a set of criteria that you can use to assess the worth of ideas mentioned by the
speakers from a podcast you can listen to.
“CORE” CRITERIA
Is the idea…
credible? (research-based, with sources or references)
objective? (unbiased, specific)
relevant? (applicable for the context)
emphatic? (expressive, insistent)
To best remember the criteria used to determine the worth of ideas, use the acronym
C.O.R.E. (credible, objective, relevant, and emphatic).
