POSITION PAPER An Electronic cigarettes, or vapes, are battery-powered
devices that produce aerosols containing nicotine, flavorings, and other
compounds. Teenagers are increasingly using e-cigarettes as their primary
nicotine source, but some may be unaware of the nicotine content. The
presence of e- cigarettes in schools raises concerns about long-term health
effects, including nicotine addiction, lung damage, and impaired brain
development, as well as environmental and fire/life safety risks. That is why e-
cigarettes should be banned in schools, for they can create major health
problems and have a negative environmental impact. Electronic cigarettes
should be banned at school due to potential health issues like lung and heart
disease. The main components, propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin, are
toxic to cells, and the more substances in an e-liquid, the higher the toxicity.
Vaping can cause irreversible lung damage and illness, and e-cigarettes may
contain harmful compounds and release dangerous chemicals, leading to
lung and cardiovascular illnesses. According to a University of North Carolina
(2018) study, the two main components in e-cigarettes, propylene glycol and
vegetable glycerin, are toxic to cells, and the more substances in an e-liquid,
the higher the toxicity. E- cigarettes emit a variety of harmful compounds,
including acetaldehyde, acrolein, and formaldehyde. These aldehydes can
induce pulmonary and cardiovascular illness. (Ogunwale, et al. 2017). In 2016,
the Surgeon General discovered that secondhand emissions contain
"nicotine; ultrafine particles; flavorings such as diacetyl, a chemical linked to
serious lung disease; volatile organic compounds such as benzene, which is
found in car exhaust; and heavy metals, such as nickel, tin, and lead." E-
cigarettes, produced, used, and disposed of, contribute to pollution and gas
emissions, causing negative environmental impacts. Disposable vapes,
packaged in plastic shells, are similar to single-use pod items. Improper
disposal of e-cigarettes and their components, such as batteries, leads to
hazardous waste and water pollution. According to Mcfarling (2022) most
vapes are made of metals, which take several years to break down, and
plastic, which never completely breaks down, becomes "microplastics" that
contaminate food, water, and the environment. Vaping also decreases indoor
air quality, with aerosols potentially exposing bystanders to dangerous
compounds and posing health hazards. Some argue that vaping is less
harmful than smoking traditional cigarettes, as nicotine by itself is considered
relatively harmless, and e-cigarettes produce fewer carcinogens than

traditional cigarettes. Additionally, some studies suggest that e-cigarettes can
be effective in smoking cessation, potentially helping smokers reduce their
habit or quit altogether. By choosing reusable devices, vape users can
contribute to a more environmentally friendly approach to vaping, reducing
the overall environmental impact of their habit. Reusable vape devices
typically have a longer lifespan, reducing the amount of plastic waste
generated compared to disposable vapes Electronic cigarettes, or vapes, are
becoming a popular source of nicotine for teenagers, but their use raises
concerns about long-term health effects, including nicotine addiction and
lung damage. Therefore, it is recommended that e-cigarettes be banned in
schools to prevent health problems and negative environmental impacts.
