Introduction

A. Horizontal Alignment
1. Alignment Layout
1.1. Alignment Creation Tool (In the Home Panel Alignment Drop down Menu)
1.2. Creating Alignment Name is about giving a name for the alignment in Alignment
Creation tool (from Alignment Drop down menu in the Home Panel). After giving an
alignment name click ok and alignment layout tool will automatically displayed. What is
an alignment Layout Tool? Alignment Layout tool is the tool where a designer can create
the layout for an alignment, delete points of intersection, insert points of Intersection,
modify points of intersection
1.3. Drawing Alignment. To draw an alignment line through adding the PI s, go to
draw down of tangent- tangent without curve drop down menu in the Alignment
layout tool and click on Tangent- Tangent (With Curves).
2. Providing Curve
 To provide the Curves for the created Alignment layout, go to the Add Fixed Curve –
Three Points in the Alignment Layout Tool Window and Select Free Curve fillet(Between
two entities, radius). And Select first tangent and then the second tangent lines on the
horizontal alignment design, looking the Command Line Specify radius. And Press the ‘Enter’
button on the keyboard and the radius will be introduced as shown below
B. Vertical Alignment
1.

1.1 Designing the Roadway

After the ground surface is analyzed, the road alignments will be designed.
1.1.1 Horizontal alignment Design
Horizontal alignment of roads consists of design of tangents and horizontal curves.
Horizontal alignment design is dependent on the context of the project road which can be
explained in terms of
 Terrain types
 Type of area (rural, urban)
 Pavement type
 Design speed (expected speed environment)
Horizontal PI points and Curves
To establish PI points and horizontal curves in AutoCAD Civil 3D 2018 as provided below.
 Click Home panel
 Drop dawn Alignment
 Select Alignment Creation Tools

 In the Create Alignment – Layout dialog box, Type Alignment Name, “cl” as provided below.
 Click ok then, ‘Alignment Layout Tools – cl ‘will be display
 Drop dawn Tangent –Tangent without curves
 Select Tangent – Tangent (with curves) as provided below.

 Snap to point “A” to specify a start point for the alignment.

 Stretch a line out, and specify additional PIs by snapping to points B, C, and D (in order). Then,
right-click to end the horizontal alignment layout command as provided below.

To edit the horizontal alignment

 Select Horizontal alignment “cl”
 Select Geometry Editor
 Select Alignment Grid view from Alignment layout tools – cl as provided below.
 To insert PI select Insert PI from Alignment layout tools-cl as provided below.

 Snap at point “F” to specify an Intersection point for the alignment as provided below.
 To provide a curve drop dawn Add fixed Curve – Three points
 Select Free Curve Fillet (Between two entities, radius)

 Select first tangent and then the second tangent lines on the horizontal alignment design
 Specify radius
 Press the ‘Enter’ button on the keyboard and the radius will be introduced as shown
below
 TO delete PI select Delete PI from Alignment Layout Tool - cl as provided below.

 Select PI “F” as shown below.

 Press ‘Esc’ button on the keyboard (Cancel)

1.1.2 Vertical alignment Design
Vertical alignment of roads consists of design of gradients and vertical curves. Vertical
alignment of roads shall be carefully designed based on a predefined set of criteria which control
the proposed vertical alignment elevations. The design considerations and criteria differ
depending on the context of the project which is the type of terrain and type of area.
Establishing VPI points and Vertical Curves:
To establish gradients and vertical curves in AutoCAD Civil 3D 2018,
 Select cl (which is the designed Horizontal Alignment)
 Select surface profile from show panel as provided below.

 Select Surface from Create Profile from Surface panel and click Add>> as shown below.
 Click Draw in profile view as provided below.

 Then Create Profile View – General panel will open

 Click Create Profile View and select profile view origin as provided below.
 The profile viewer will be display as provided below.

 From ‘Home’ panel drop dawn Profile select Profile Creation Tools as provided below.
 Select the grid lines form the profile view then Create profile – Draw New panel will be
opened then provide the Name, “vl” as provided below.

 Click ok
 Drop dawn Draw Tangent without curves and select Draw Tangent with curves as provided
below.

 Snap to point “A” to specify a start point for the vertical alignment.
 Stretch the line out, and specify additional PVIs by snapping to points B, C, and D (in order).
Then, right-click to end the Vertical alignment layout command; as provided below.
To edit the vertical alignment,
 Select vertical alignment “vl”.
 Select Geometry Editor from the shown panel.
 Select Profile Grid View from profile layout tools as provided below.

 To insert PVI, select Insert PVI from Profile Layout Tools – vl as provided below.
 Snap at point “F” to specify an Intersection point for the profile as provided below.

 To provide a curve drop dawn Draw Free parabola by three points then
 Select Free vertical Curve (parabola)
 Select first tangent and the second tangent from the vertical alignment design
 Specify K Value as provided below.

 Then press the ‘Enter’ button on the keyboard.

 TO Delete PVI select Delete PVI from Profile Layout Tools - vl as provided below.

 Select PVI “F” as provided below.

 Then press ‘Esc’ button on the keyboard (Cancel)
