Plan of Investigation

“Food,” is the theme of the researcher's group with, “The History Behind Caribbean Cuisine,”

being the researcher's chosen topic of investigation.

By completing this SBA, the researcher expects to enhance their vocabulary since new words

will be encountered and used in the oral presentation; the researcher also expects to develop their

analytical and summary writing skills as they analyze and summarize the information gathered

from their artifacts to be used in the reflections and reports.

Through surfing the World Wide Web and reading books; one printed article, one picture, and

one video will be collected to support their investigation. The information collected will be

reflected upon and summarized.

Reflection 1

Artifact 1; Article “The History of Caribbean Cuisine: A Culinary Journey Through the Islands”

by The Veil Restaurant and Bar

The artifact is based on the history of the Caribbean and how it contributed to the flavor of the

Caribbean dishes eaten today. The researcher then learned of the earliest influences and what

they brought to the table as it speaks to the food and how it's prepared, it also mentioned how

over time and with the integration of new races the dishes were developed and reshaped into

something new.

Artifact 2; Picture “THE ORIGINS OF CARIBBEAN FOOD”

This artifact speaks on the three most common flavors found in Caribbean food. It talks about the

signature flavors of the Caribbean and depicts it with a picture showing a pot of shrimp being

cooked using one of the signature seasoning mixes.

Artifact 3; Video “Caribbean Culture Explained with Food” by Islander

This artifact explains the cultural diversity of Caribbean food and the reason behind it. This

artifact also informs viewers on how to make some of the dishes found in the Caribbean and the

different seasonings and spices used in the different dishes. The researcher also learned the

reasons behind the popularization of Caribbean cuisine.

Reflection 2:

Artifact 1; Article “The History of Caribbean Cuisine: A Culinary Journey Through the Islands”

by The Veil Restaurant and Bar

This article informs readers of the history of the Caribbean and its culture. The writer uses

historical events in their article, for example, “The transatlantic slave trade brought millions of

Africans to the Caribbean, and with them came new culinary techniques and ingredients”, this

highlights the history of the Caribbean.

Artifact 2; Picture “THE ORIGINS OF CARIBBEAN FOOD”

This picture entertains and informs viewers of the signature flavors of Caribbean food. The

creator used animated drawings and a bold background to capture the attention of viewers.

Artifact 3; Video “Caribbean Culture Explained with Food” by Islander

This video informs and persuades viewers to take a trip to the Caribbean and enjoy its many

delicacies, especially the food. The videographer uses the device's visual imagery such as clips

showing the Caribbean Sea and a view of the island from atop one of its mountains, it also shows

pictures and clips of historical monuments of the isles. This was used to prompt viewers into

taking a trip to the Caribbean for a holiday.

Reflection 3

Completing this School Based Assessment has helped me greatly to recognize my weaknesses

and improve upon them. Selecting competent members was key to getting the work done

efficiently. I learned to help others, cooperate, and work better as a group. Preparing for this

investigation was important for the research and work ahead, since this outlines what needs to be

discovered, making the research easy to obtain and analyze. Reflecting on the information

acquired, further developed the skill of recognizing main ideas to summarize artifacts. This

research was a success and an achievement for me, it forced me to face my fears by placing me

out of my comfort zone. This English School Based Assessment improved me, socially, and

intellectually and I look forward to using these skills learned in the continuance of my education

in university.
Oral presentation Overview

The topic “Food” will be presented in the form of a poem in a mixture of standard English and
Creoles. The reason I chose to
compose a poem because it is the most impact and meaningful way to
awaken our awareness of the importance of culture in food in the Caribbean.
The information for my presentation is taken from my artifacts and it is intended to awaken oral
tradition in the area of Culture Found in Food.
