QUESTION 1

Two loads 𝒁𝟏 = 𝟐𝟎𝟎 + 𝒋𝟎 𝛀 and 𝒁𝟐 = 𝟐𝟎 + 𝒋𝟒𝟎 𝛀 are connected across a 400 V, 60 Hz as shown
in Figure 1.
a) Find the total real and reactive power, the power factor at the source, and the total
current.
b) Calculate the value capacitance of the capacitor connected across the loads to
improve the overall power factor to 0.85 lagging.

Question 2

Three parallel three-phase loads are supplied from a 240 V, 60-Hz three-phase supply. The loads
are as follows:
Load 1: A 20 HP motor operating at full-load and 0.7 lagging power factor.
Load 2: A balanced resistive load that draws a total of 8 kW.
Load 3: A Y-connected capacitor bank with a total rating of 10 kvar.
a) What is the total system kW, kvar, power factor, and the supply current per phase?
b) What is the system power factor and the supply current per phase when the resistive load and
induction motor are operating but the capacitor bank is switched off?

(15 marks)

Question 3

A two-legged core is shown in Figure 3. The winding on the left leg of the core (N1) has 400 turns,
and the winding on the right (N2) has 300 turns. The coils are wound in the directions shown in the
figure. If the dimensions are as shown, then what flux would be produced by currents 𝑰𝟏 = 𝟏 𝑨 and
𝑰𝟐 = 𝟏. 𝟓 𝑨? Assume 𝝁𝒓 = 𝟏𝟎𝟎𝟎.
