and challenging.
The Bio-psychosocial Approach

• This approach emphasizes that


biological, psychological, and social
factors interact to produce problems
of adolescents develop.
SOME MAJOR PROBLEMS
ADOLESCENTS FACE
• Substance abuse- also known as drug abuse, is the use of a
drug in amounts or by methods that are harmful to the
individual or others. It is a form of substance-related
disorder.
• Suicide- is death caused by injuring oneself with the intent
to die. A suicide attempt is when someone harms
themselves with any intent to end their life.
SOME MAJOR PROBLEMS
ADOLESCENTS FACE
• Depression- is a common and serious medical illness that negatively
affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. This is more
than just sadness. An experience of lack of interest and pleasure in daily
activities.
✓Psychotherapy is a general term for treating depression by talking
about depression and related issues with a mental health professional.
✓Antidepressants help relieve the symptoms of depression and
anxiety.
SOME MAJOR PROBLEMS
ADOLESCENTS FACE
• Juvenile Delinquency- is a term commonly used in
academic literature for referring to a young person who has
committed a criminal offence such as shoplifting, dealing
drugs and murder which are illegal as well as destructive to
themselves.
• Role Identity- a factor that may increase a young person’s
vulnerability to depression.
SOME MAJOR PROBLEMS
ADOLESCENTS FACE
• Family pressure- difficulty communicating with family,
pressure from your family to perform well academically,
feeling stress associated with family expectations.
• Rebellion- is a part of social development in
adolescents in order for them to develop an identity
independent from their parents or family and a capacity
for independent decision-making.
