Chinese Colonization (along the spanish period)

- They were here because they’re
traders.
- When Spain colonized the Philippines, Spain continued the trading activity
between the Philippines and china.
- There were 30-40 Chinese trading junks arrived to Manila.
- Chinese junks do not refer to garbage. Junks are ships that are used for
explorations, warfares, traveling, housing, and trading activities.
- Some of their major exports are silk, ceramics, gold and silver threads, fowls
(any form of bird that can be consumed), and fine crockery (tablewares).
- Chinese traders prefer silver coins as payment. Because, silver is more highly
valued than gold.
- Chinese were called Sangley before by the Spaniards. Sangley came from the
Chinese word Sengli, meaning trade (traveling merchant). It was also derived
from another Chinese word meaning Shang lu . Sengli was used before because
they couldn’t pronounce the word Shang lu.
- The Chinese were here in the Philippines because of Economic reasons or
trading reasons.
- Before there was a Chinese man who wanted to invade Manila. He is Lim Ah
Hong , his real name is Lin Feng . He was very determined to come here to
establish a Chinese settlement in Manila. He arrived here on Nov 29, 1574.
- Nov 30 , they actualized their first attack in Manila. He brought many men, he
surpassed the count of all the sent expeditions before. He brought 2,000
seamen, 2,000 soldiers, 1,000 women, and 62 ships or vessels.
- The commander of the attack was Sioco. The first attack that they made was
immediately repulsed under Governor LaVezares.
- Juan De Salcedo repulsed the 2nd Chinese attack on Dec 3.
- Lima Hong was a Chinese pirate, and he was an outlaw in China. (He
was banned or prohibited to stay and live in China.)
- After his defeat in Manila, he sailed to Pangasinan . He established a kingdom
or a place there.
- Juan De Salcedo besieged the Chinese kingdom by the Spanish forces.
Therefore, they didn’t do it alone. He brought his fellow Spaniards numbering
around 250 , and Filipinos numbering around 2,500.
- They didn’t get to catch Lima Hong because he escaped.
- In May 1575 months, after someone came to Manila. He was
Aumon . He was sent here to find Lima Hong to bring him back to
China for punishment.
- The Spanish government became afraid of the Spanish control of the Philippine
economy. They felt threatened , so they imposed a policy on the Chinese.
- This policy restricts Chinese immigrants. The Spanish imposed heavy taxes on all
the Chinese here in the Philippines. That is to discourage them from coming to the
Philippines.
- For those who want to disobey the policy, they will be sent back to China.
- For those who wanted to stay, they all resided in Parian (A place in Manila)
- Because of the Policies, the Chineses rebelled. They made 5 revolutions under Spain
but they lost. Because politically and militarily speaking they are under all European
countries.
- There were approximately 100,000 Chineses here in the Philippines before.

Imports from Japan:

- Salted Meats, Iron weapons, utensils, Writing cases, and Paper fans.

Exports from Japan:

Spaniards didn’t impose heavy policies on the Japanese, because they didn’t become a
