PARTICIPANTS

We visited Wards, ICU-1 and ICU-2 found in Mwaisela block.

1. Type of care delivery model used.

- In the wards they use modular during day time in which patients are divided in to
cubes and registered nurses and health attendants are allocated to these cubes while in
the night functional model is used due to the fact that at night number of staffs is
shortened hence, each registered nurse is assigned a special task to do to every
patient, the same applied to health attendants.
- In ICU they apply total patient care model in which each registered nurse is given one
to two patients to provide care and the nurse will be responsible for them in whole
shift.

2. Alternative models and the reason for their application.

- In the ward and ICU, they can use primary nursing method in which the primary
nurse will be selected during the day shift. This nurse will make the plan of care for
the patients in his or cube that will be carried by fellow nurses during the day shift
and continue to be carried by other nurses during night shift until the next day when
another plan to be implemented for 24 hours will be made.
- Advantage of this model is that, it enables holistic, comprehensive, continuous and
coordinated nursing process for meeting the total needs of each patient compared to
modular model and total patient care model.
