D. ACTIVITY

Activity: Let’s Exercise! Bongbong’s

house
Instruction: In a Cartesian Coordinate Plane, plot the
points based on the given situation.
(Each student will be given a paper graph)

Scenario: Every Saturday, a lovely couple namely Leni and

Bongbong meet at the town plaza for a morning exercise.
The town plaza is plotted at point (-2, -1) of the Cartesian PLAZA Leni’s
plane. From the town plaza, Leni’s house is located 3 km House
east while Bongbong’s house is situated 4 km north of the
town plaza. Illustrate the location of their houses and the
plaza on the Coordinate plane.

F. ABSTRACTION

Distance is defined as the amount of space between

two places. It is always a nonnegative value and is
usually expressed using units of length such as miles,
meters and kilometers.

Finding the distance Between Two Points (x , y ) and

1 1

(x , y ) when y1 = y2
2 2

Distance between two points may be

determined depending on the coordinates of these
points which are represented by (x , y ) and (x , y ).
1 1 2 2

Using the map in the previous activity, it can be

determined that there are three possible ways to solve
for distance between two points depending on the
location of these points.Let us discuss each of them.

PLAZA Leni’s
House

Comparing the coordinates of the houses which

are (-2, -1) and (1 -1) respectively, it’s easy to tell that
they lie on the same horizontal line. Therefore, they

Student- Teacher: Lorie Anne E. Todoc 4

have equal ordinates (y – coordinates) which are both
equal to-1.
You must remember that the distance between
any two points is always positive. Also, given points A
and B, the distance of A to B is equal to the distance of
B to A.
Thus,
AB= BA .
In order to determine the distance between
any two points with equal ordinates, simply solve for
the absolute value of the difference of their abscissas
or use the formula:
d=|𝑥2−𝑥1|
To solve the given problem, substitute the values of x1
and x2.: d=|1−(−2)|
d=|3|
Okay try to solve everyone using your slate boards
d=3
Very good! So therefore the distance between the house of
Leni and the Plaza is 3 kilometers. Its 3 ma’am.

B. Distance between two points (x1, y1) and (x2, y2)

when x = x 1 2

Example 2: Find the distance between the town plaza

and Bogbong’s house. Looking at the house of
Bongbong and the Plaza on the map, it can be noted
that the coordinates of their houses which are (-2, 3)
and (-2, -1) which both lie on the same vertical line,
thus indicating that they have the same abscissas.

Since the abscissas are equal, the Ma’am it’s

BONGBONG distance may be obtained by
finding the absolute value of the d=|𝑦2−𝑦1|
difference of the ordinates, or by d=|-1−3|
using the formula:
d=|4|
So who can guess the formula? d=4

PLAZA Very good! So therefore the distance

Now try to solve it in your seats. between the house of Bongbong and the
Plaza is 4 kilometers.

C. Distance between any two points (x , y ) and

1 1

(x , y )
2 2

Student- Teacher: Lorie Anne E. Todoc 5

Example 3: Find the distance between the houses of
Bongbong and Leni.
Let’s now take a look at the distance between
Bongbong and Leni’s houses.

BONGBONG

PLAZA LENI

Since coordinates of both houses don’t lie on the same

horizontal or vertical line, we will use the Pythagorean
theorem in solving for the distance between the two
houses since the three points on the map form a right
triangle and the distance between Leni’s and
Bongbong’s houses represent the hypotenuse.

Based on the Pythagorean theorem, c = a + b . What is

2 2 2
c = √ a2 +b 2 ma’am.
the formula in solving for the hypotenuse, anyone?

Since the distance between Leni and

Bongbong’s house represent the hypotenuse c, sides a
and b will be represented by the distances between the
plaza and Leni’s house, and the plaza and Bongbong’s
house, respectively. Thus:
c = √ a2 +b 2

2
c=
( distance between Plaza∧Leni )
2
+(distance between plaza∧Bongbong)

Remember that the distance between the Plaza

and Leni’s house was obtained using the formula
d=|𝑥2−𝑥1|, while the distance between the plaza and
Bongbong’s house was obtained using the formula
d=|𝑦2−𝑦1|. Substituting these two in the above
equation, c may be solved using the formula:
c= √|x −x | +|y − y |
2 1
2
2 1
2

Substituting the coordinates of the two given points (-2,

3) and (1, -1) in the equation: √ 2
c= |1−(−2)| +|−1−3|
2

√ 2
c = |3| +|−4|
2

Student- Teacher: Lorie Anne E. Todoc c =√ 9+16 6

c = √ 25

c=5
Okay try to solve it in your seats.

Very good! Therefore, the distance between the houses

of the couple Leni and Bongbong is 5km.

The formula used in the last problem is actually

what we call the distance formula, which may be used
in finding the distance between any two given points
(x1, y1) and (x2, y2), regardless if they lie on the same
vertical or horizontal line or not. Instead of c, we will
use d to represent the word distance. Thus,
d= √|x −x | +|y − y |
2 1
2
2 1
2

Since the square of a real number always leads

to a positive value, the distance formula is further
simplified into

d= √ ( x −x ) + ( y − y )
2 1
2
2 1
2
Distance Formula

Example: How long is a segment which has endpoints

S(1, 3) and T(7, 11)?
To solve the given problem, identify the values of the
coordinates (x1, y1) and (x2, y2), then substitute them in
the formula.

(x1, y1) = (1, 3) (x2, y2) = (7, 11)

d= √ ( x −x ) + ( y − y )
2 1
2
2 1
2

ST = √ ( 7−1 )2+ ( 11−3 ) 2

ST = |6| +|8| √ 2 2

ST =√ 36+64
ST= √ 100
ST = 10
Therefore, the segment is 10 units long.

Instruction: Find the distance between each pair of

points on the coordinate plane. Each question is
answerable for 15 seconds. When the time is up, raise
your answer using the slate board. 1.(x1, y1) = (2,-3) (x2, y2) = (10, -3)

1. M (2,-3) and N (10, -3)

d=| x 2−x 1|

d=|10−(2)|
d=|8|
d=8

Student- Teacher: Lorie Anne E. Todoc 7

Amazing class, how about this?
2. (x1, y1) = (3, -7) (x2, y2) = (3, 8)
P (3, -7) and Q (3, 8)

d=| y 2− y 1|

d=|8−(-7)|
d=|15|
d=15
Yes, ma’am!

Very good class! You want more? 3. (x1, Y1) = (2,3) (x2, y2) = (14, 8)
Alright! Solve this in your seats
A (2,3) and B (14, 8)
d= √ ( x −x ) + ( y − y )
2 1
2
2 1
2

ST = √ ( 14−2 )2+ ( 8−3 )2

ST = √|12| +|5|
2 2

ST =√ 144+25

ST= √ 169

ST = 13
