REINFORCEMENT IN BUILDINGS

Size and weight of bars

The general formula to find the weight of a bar is D2/162 kg/m
The standard length of a bar is 12m

Diameter of bar Weight (kg/m) Weight per Bar

6mm 0.222 kg/m 2.664 kg/bar
8mm 0.395 kg/m 4.74 kg/bar
10mm 0.617 kg/m 7.404 kg/bar
12mm 0.889 kg/m 10.668 kg/bar
16mm 1.58 kg/m 18.96 kg/bar
20mm 2.469 kg/m 29.628 kg/bar
24mm 3.858 kg/m 46.296 kg/bar

Footing

L
Minimum cover = 50mm

No. of bars = Opposite length/Spacing (c/c) + 1

Bend length = 10d to 16d: multiply by 2 because of both ends
L =Length of footing – 2(Cover)
Cutting length = L + 2(Bend length)

Column bend = 16d; diameter of the column

Column
Overlapping reinforcement = 45d; diameter of column
Minimum cover for columns/beams = 25mm to 50mm (25mm ideal for columns)
Length of bar = Height of column + Bend + Overlap
Total length of bars in column = Length of bar x Number of bars
Links

a
b B

Number of links = Length of column or beam/spacing + 1

Cutting length = 2(a + e) +24d; faster method
Cutting length = 2((A – 2x cover) + (B – 2x cover)) + 10d
Total length of links = Cutting length x Number of links
Beams
Minimum cover for columns/beams = 25mm to 50 mm (40mm ideal for beams)
Lap length = 50d
Number of laps(assumption) – Total length of beam/12
Total lap length = Number of laps x 50d
Total length of bars in beam = (Total lap length + total length of beam) x Number of bars
Slab
Minimum cover for slab = 25mm (deduct from total length of short or long side x 2)
Lapping for slab = 60d
Number of laps(assumption) – Total length short or long side/12
