Initiatives undertaken by the Ministry of Tourism in India to promote ethical

tourism:

1. Responsible Tourism:The concept of responsible tourism emphasizes minimizing the

negative impacts of tourism on local communities and the environment while
maximizing the benefits. The ministry promotes responsible tourism through various
campaigns and initiatives. Eg. Travel for Life program

2. Campaigns and Awareness Programs:The Ministry of Tourism organizes campaigns and

awareness programs to educate tourists about responsible travel practices. For
example, campaigns like "Atithi Devo Bhava" (Guest is God) emphasize the importance
of respecting local customs, traditions, and the environment.

3. Sustainable Tourism Development:The ministry supports sustainable tourism

development by encouraging eco-friendly accommodations, promoting conservation
projects, and facilitating community-based tourism initiatives. One such scheme is
the "Swadesh Darshan Scheme," which focuses on developing thematic circuits
showcasing the rich cultural and natural heritage of India in a sustainable manner.

4. Certification Programs:To promote ethical practices in the tourism industry, the

ministry has introduced certification programs such as the "Incredible India Bed
and Breakfast/Homestay Establishments Scheme." This scheme encourages the
registration of bed and breakfast establishments and homestays that adhere to
certain quality standards and ethical guidelines.

5. Capacity Building:The ministry conducts training and capacity-building programs

for tourism stakeholders, including local communities, tour guides, and hospitality
staff. The "Hunar Se Rozgar Tak" (From Skill to Employment) initiative aims to
provide skill development training to unemployed youth for employment opportunities
in the tourism sector.

6. Promotion of Cultural Heritage:The ministry promotes the preservation and

sustainable utilization of India's cultural heritage through responsible tourism
practices. Schemes like the "National Mission on Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and
Spiritual Augmentation Drive (PRASAD)" focus on improving infrastructure and
amenities at pilgrimage sites while preserving their cultural significance.

These initiatives and schemes collectively contribute to the promotion of ethical

tourism in India by ensuring that tourism benefits local communities, respects
cultural heritage, and protects the environment.
