Five Years Sustainability Plan
1. Introduction
Karakoram International University (KIU) has a central role in disseminating and creating
knowledge, imparting skills and creating positive attitudes among the people of the mountainous
region Gilgit Baltistan (GB). KIU has the credit of being the first university in the beautiful
mountainous Northern part of Pakistan. Starting with a few departments in the beginning; KIU is
growing exponentially in terms of program delivery and outreach.
To provide higher education and research opportunities at the doorsteps of the people of GB, KIU
is extending its outreach to other districts of GB as well. In first phase, Karakoram International
University has established three of its new sub-campuses at Hunza, Ghizer and Diamer. These
campuses have been established under the umbrella PC1 of the Vision 2025 of the Higher
Education Commissioner of Pakistan (HEC), Government of Pakistan, to provide access to higher
education at the district level.

The “Tourism and Hospitality Management” program is the flagship program of the Hunza campus
and it created valuable national and international levels by engaging multinational chain hotels and
Pakistan and abroad e.g. Serena Hotels, Gulf Court Hotel Dubai, Tang International China etc.

With the approval of the competent authority, some redundant faculty and staff of the Hunza
campus were placed at the main campus. If the payroll burden of the said employees is shifted to
the main campus following will be the financial scenario KIU, Hunza campus;

Quality is of greater essence for the management of the campus. It is anticipated that the campus
will attract more learners in the years ahead because of its unique programs and quality being the
locus of its mission.
There are more than 100 Schools and Colleges in Hunza-Nager region and these feeding units are
key strength in increasing the enrollments in diversified programs at KIU, some of the major units
in District Hunza and Nagar are as follow:
9. Challenges
Although the government of GB has allocated 30 million funds for the acquisition of land
for a permanent campus, it needs to be enhanced to purchase suitable land for the
establishment of a purposeful academic complex.
Non-availability of Senior faculty due to the remote location of campus/area.
Job Status of employees (Faculty & Admin Staff). Due to the contractual status, many
good PhD. Faculty have resigned and existing ones are applying to other universities or
organizations at city areas
The campus has been running the academic activities by using its own resources since
December 2021 as project funds were fully utilized. So far no financial support has been
received from the federal government and provincial government.
10. The Alumni Tracer Study of Karakoram International University, Hunza Campus
The study aimed to investigate the employability of graduates and their employment profiles at
Karakoram International University, Hunza Campus, as of April 2023.

The tracer study of the alumni reveals the overall percentage of students, who have graduated from
Karakoram International University, Hunza Campus, with a total of 306 graduates. These alumni
are divided among three departments: Tourism and Hospitality Management, Development
Studies, and Biological Sciences and Mathematics. Notably, the flagship programs at the
university are Tourism and Hospitality Management and Development Studies, and a significant
portion of graduating students belong to these two departments.
It is worth noting that a majority of the graduates have secured employment in sectors related to
the hotel industry, the NGO sector, and the teaching profession. Graduates from the Tourism and
Hospitality Management department are primarily employed within the hotel industry, while
Development Studies alumni are contributing their services to various NGOs across the country.
A significant number of graduates have selected to do their own business in the field of travel,
tourism, and hotel sector. Additionally, a few of our alumni have chosen to offer their expertise
abroad and some are pursuing higher studies (MS and PhD.).
11. Conclusion
It can be concluded from the overall progress that the campus is in a sustainable position. There is
great potential to expand the academic activities from undergraduate to graduate-level degree
programs. Additionally, short courses in Tourism and Hotel Management, Cross border Trade,
Graphic Designing, Financial Services, Freelancing and many more in connection with CPEC
initiatives and projects.
