Half Double crochet (hdc)

This can be made as a decorative storage jar cover or you can pop a tea light inside a glass
jar for a beautiful candle cover which gives a dancing display of light. If you wish to use as a
candle cover, please use 100% cotton yarn to give the best heat resistance and avoid melting
of synthetic fibres. This pattern is written so you can easily adjust the size to fit your choice of
jar or other container. Choose a yarn size and hook to fit your choice of jar, as a guide, I have
used Stylecraft Craft Cotton DK with a 3mm hook to produce a height of 7cm and Sugar n
Cream Cotton Aran with a 5mm hook to produce a height of 12cm including finishing rows.
For taller jars, you can always add rows to increase the height.

You will need:

100% cotton yarn in any colour and size you choose
A suitable hook size for your yarn size
You will also need a yarn needle and scissors.

For this pattern you will be working in rounds. For a neater, straighter seam line, follow this
joining process for each round:
ch2, skip the st at the bottom of the ch, follow instructions to end of round.
When you reach the beginning of the round again, hdc in the st you skipped at the bottom of
the beginning ch2. sl st into the top of beginning hdc to join.

When working in each stitch (after the starting chain), ensure you go in between the middle
bar and under both loops. Keep this consistent when working into the chain stitches you
make throughout the pattern. This will help keep all stitches visible and the pattern in line.

To make the Heart Jar Cover :

Make your starting chain, chain until you can wrap the chain comfortably around the jar and
slip stitch into the first chain stitch to join to make your starting circle. Ensure your chain is
not twisted and slip onto the jar to check the fit, it should sit nicely around without stretching
or falling off. The cover will become tighter as its made up and will need a bit of stretching to
get on the jar, this will help it keep its place.

R1. ch2, hdc in the next and each remaining st, join as instructed above (count the number
of your stitches, this number should remain consistent throughout).
R2. ch2, hdc in the next 15 st, ch1 and skip the next st, hdc in each remaining st, join as
before.
R3. ch2, hdc in the next 14 st, ch1 and sk next st, hdc in the next st, ch1 and sk next st, hdc
in each remaining st, join as before.
R4. ch2, hdc in next 13 st, ch1 and sk next st, hdc in next 3 st, ch1 and sk next st, hdc in
each remaining st, join as before.
R5. ch2, hdc in next 12 st, ch1 and sk next st, hdc in next 5 st, ch1 and sk next st, hdc in
each remaining st, join as before.
R6. ch2, hdc in next 11 st, ch1 and sk next st, hdc in next 7 st, ch1 and sk next st, hdc in
each remaining st, join as before.
R7. ch2, hdc in next 10 st, ch1 and sk next st, hdc in next 9 st, ch1 and sk next st, hdc in
each remaining st, join as before.
R8. ch2, hdc in next 10 st, ch1 and sk next st, hdc in next 4 st, ch1 and sk next st, hdc in next
4 st, ch1 and sk next st, hdc in each remaining st, join as before.
R9. ch2, hdc in next 11 st, ch1 and sk next st, hdc in next 2 st, ch1 and sk next st, hdc in next
st, ch1 and sk next st, hdc in next 2 st, ch1 and sk next st, hdc in each remaining st, join as
before.
R10. ch2, hdc in next 12 st, ch1 and sk next st, hdc in next 5 st, ch1 and sk next st, hdc in
each remaining st, join as before.
R11. ch2, hdc in next st and each remaining st, join as before.
You can finish here if this is large enough to cover your jar. You can add a row of sc along the
top and the bottom, working into the original chain, if you have space left to cover for a nice
neat finish. If you have a taller jar or bottle and would like to cover more, you can add more
rows evenly to R1. and R11.
Weave in your ends and slip onto your jar and you have a lovely jar cover. You can add detail
and make your heart shape stand out more by threading a pretty ribbon in and out of the
heart spaces.

Safety First: Please take care if you are using candles. Ensure you place the jar on a heat
proof surface and never leave a lit candle unattended. Keep the cover away from the flame.
