How We Think About Sustainability at Celanese

Our Sustainability Framework

“We’ve put Sustainability at the
center of the equation. We create a
range of products essential to many
aspects of life and designed to safely
support a world in transition. Enabled
by the passion of our people and the
power of chemistry, we are focused
on expanding our differentiated
chemistries and specialty materials
that help our customers to lower the
carbon footprints of their products
and move toward a circular
economy”

ISCC+ certification

► Mass balance is used widely across industries The mass balance approach explained
because it can be implemented in existing
manufacturing processes that are often complex
and large scale
► Cost and effort of segregating fossil from renewable
feedstock would inhibit implementation at the
initial low scale
► Example: many chemicals are based on natural gas,
but there is only one pipeline for both fossil and
renewable natural gas
► ISCC+ provides a solid framework for mass balance
accounting using a chain of custody certification
scheme to guarantee the bio-based, or circular
content of chemicals
► ISCC+ enables companies to make transparent and
credible claims via certified materials that are
tracked along the supply chain
