Stan’s marathon: The first 12 weeks

It all started at my birthday party. I was enjoying a delicious slice of cheesecake, when a friend asked me
how I was going to mark my 50th year. I hadn’t thought that 50 would be different from any other year
of my life, but I didn’t want to appear to be without any plans. Everyone was waiting for an answer – my
family, friends and colleagues – so I said the first thing that came into my head: ‘I’m going to run a
marathon and raise money for charity.’ Sometimes I should keep my mouth shut!
That’s when it began; no more lovely cheesecake, and the start of a life of diet plans, stretching and a
lot of self-discipline. I’ve always liked jogging, so the idea of running a marathon wasn’t completely
impossible. I had plenty of time to train, too because I only work three days a week. But I had no idea
where to start – how do you prepare for a 26.2 mile run? I decided to get professional advice.
I found a charity that gave me free information about training in exchange for a donation. It soon
became clear that my vague plan of ‘less cake, more running’ needed some work. I went to see an expert
– a personal trainer at my local gym. I learned that I’d need to train for six months, running almost every
day. I would need to increase the amount of time I ran every week. I didn’t run long distances every day,
just some days. Of course if you’re training like that, you need to know how to take care of yourself:
your diet, your body, your social life, your job, your marriage … A good pair of running shoes helps too!
After six weeks, I was going from strength to strength and loving the training plan, but in week 11 I
injured myself. I stopped running for a few days and got very depressed. My life had changed. I’d got
obsessed with running the marathon. For weeks I’d done nothing except train. My wife thought I was
doing too much. I didn’t have time to see my friends. I wanted to give it all up. How could I carry on?

Next week: Stan tells us how he got back on track and achieved his goal.
