Provinces:
Masbate
The word "Masbate" originates from the Latin word "masbad," which translates
to "a lot of gold." The locals of Masbate welcomed the Spanish settlers when
they arrived in the 1790s. They gave gold and some utensils to the Spaniards
as a token of their friendship. In the mountains that are today home to the town
of Arroyo, the Spaniards discovered multiple gold mines. Additionally, there
were Spanish settlements in Masbate in the 1850s. In 1864, Masbate town
was originally established. Afterwards, in 1869, they established the Town of
Milagros, the Pueblo de Cervantéz (later called Placer), and the Town of
Malobago (Cataingan) in 1872.
