I. Product Information

Product Information and Description

Cara-board

Cara-board is an amalgamation of a paperboard and a chalkboard product,

visually representing the latter and functionally acting as both, although limited due
to the nature and material of the product. The production follows an ancient way of
producing a paper product, in which a cellulose fiber source is converted into a pulp,
set in a screen, and dried under the sun, apart from the intervention that suits the
unique and simple way of producing this board. The product consists of carabao
manure as its primary solute with banana tree trunks acting as adhesive for the
mixture. Following a fundamental process, its solvent consists of only water
measured out equivalent to the measurement of solutes. Lastly, the product is
enhanced by the fragrance of Sampaguita, indirectly incorporated into the board by
storing the product in a container filled with the smell of the flower.

Recognizing the worldwide predicament of Global warming, turning potent

matters emitting greenhouse gases and converting them into something that may
assist in decreasing the problem is something that society must work towards.
Hence, producing a product that uses an alternative material away from trees not
only helps preserve lands but also in the maintenance of proper weather conditions.
The choice of carabao manure as the primary source of material for Cara-board not
only helps in decreasing the emission of greenhouse gases, but also assists in
procuring individuals to create a paper product away from the cutting down of trees,
and towards a greener, and healthier world.

Specific Objectives

Specific

Ultimately, the objective of the product is to recognize and mitigate the

repercussions of Global warming, caused by another increasing problem driven by
the usage of trees for various furniture and paper products. In the grand scheme of
things, no major movement can be made in fixing the entirety of an already existing
worldwide problem, however, particular and small steps toward that major goal can
be attained with the help of innovation and application of fundamental processes.
Hence, innovations like Cara-board, a paperboard/chalkboard product that does not
employ the cutting of trees for its production may be a steppingstone in regulating
worldwide temperature.

Measurable

Attention and exposure to the possibility that carabao manure can be made
into a paper product in the locality where that material came from is the first step
towards obtaining the grand objective of the product. Laying out the knowledge to a
group of local farmers and their families gives rise to the recognition that there are
other uses for the excretion of their animals. This initiation opens the possibility that
a material regarded as useless may be useful under various processes and
information.

Achievable

Group 6_Cara-board Social Innovation Project

BSMA - 2022 (May, 2024)

Creativity, Curiosity and Innovation:
Cultivating the Minds of Young Entrepreneurs

Giving rise to the information on Cara-board production and maintaining its

dissemination on the locality from which the materials are derived is an objective
manageable. Further spreading of the existence of Cara-board and its benefits can
be attained given the possibility that farmers may speak of the innovative material of
the product.

Relevant

Reduction of excretes emitting greenhouse gases and production of paper

products without intervention of cutting trees is a timely solution for the current
condition of Earth and its rising temperature due to the deficiency of trees. Producing
a product that deals with two problems in one is a relevant innovation considering
the major implication that Global warming presents for current and future
generations.

Time-bound

Working on solving a problem that exists already and setting out for minor
steps toward the solution is an objective that should be done as soon as possible.
Thus, the initiation and production of Cara-board marks the beginning of a rigorous
timeline where people use alternative materials for producing paper products instead
of the commercial and conventional process of using trees.

III. Product Offering

Product Name

Cara-board

The product name Cara-board highlights the product's distinctive material and
the conventional and commercial product in the papermaking industry. Cara-board, a
shortened play of the terms Carabao and Board emphasize the unconventional
innovation that the product offers having the primary material utilizing carabao
excretes and the output that has undergone production producing a paperboard
product. Its name and its features provide a novel identity. This product offers the
conventional characteristics of a paperboard product and the unconventional usage
of waste for further sustainability of the environment.

Product Concept

Cara-board is an innovation utilizing the excretion of carabaos and banana

tree trunks of an already cut-down banana tree for its solute and water for its solvent.
Its mixture consists of all-natural materials which validates the concept and purpose
of the product. Its production follows an ancient and fundamental process, referring
to the ancient way of producing paper. The first papers were made from recycled
fishing nets, bamboo, mulberry bark, or hemp. Papermakers follow several steps to
make paper (Williams R., 2021). According to Robert Williams (2021), papermakers
of ancient times began the papermaking process by harvesting fibers. Then, large
pits lined with stones or wooden vats were used to soak, or ret, the fibers for up to
three months. The papermaker then pounded the fibers into pulp using wooden tools
or rocks. Next, the pulp is poured and spread evenly on top of the mold by hand.

Creativity, Curiosity and Innovation:

Similar to the production process of Cara-board, the pulp is left on the screen,
drained, and dried under the sun. In adherence to the fundamental and ancient way
of producing a paper product, Cara-board follows the same process of collecting a
fiber source, converting it into pulp, molded, and leaving the mixture to dry. This
attribute of Cara-board utilizes the conventional and natural way of creating paper
and emphasizes the usage of fibers away from the commercialized usage of trees
for paper production.

Trees are the primary source of cellulose for paper production due to their
high percentage of this fiber. Hence, the papermaking industry utilizes this resource
for paper production. However, this structural component exists in all plants, yet
trees are preferred due to their superiority of containing the utmost percentage of this
polymer. All plant-thickened secondary cell walls are only deposited in certain cell
types at the cessation of cell expansion but form the majority of biomass. Secondary
Cellulose makes up 35–45% of the dry weight of grass secondary cell walls (Gao et
al., 2020). The swamp-type water buffalo native in the Philippines primarily eats
grass as its energy source, this explains the availability of cellulose fiber in the
excretion of carabaos, which can be attributed to the digestive process of the animal.

The utilization of carabao manure in the production process of Cara-board is

what sets it apart from the commercialized counterpart of the product. This usage is
thanks to the digestive system of diverse species in which carabao, a domestic water
buffalo takes part. Bovines are typical ruminants whose stomach consists of four
chambers (Braun, 2016). During the digestive process, the raw materials first flow
into rumen and reticulum, where it is processed mechanically and exposed to
bacteria that can break down cellulose (foregut fermentation) and then the semi-
digested materials (cud) move back into the mouth in the form of small balls of food
from the two chambers, and subsequently, the regurgitated materials are re-chewed
and re-swallowed, finally, the materials pass through omasum and abomasum to

Creativity, Curiosity and Innovation:

squeeze out all of the moisture. In these chambers, the digestive enzyme lysozyme
and many anaerobic microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, infusorians, and
protozoan, can primarily break down plant fibers, especially hemicellulose, and
pectin. Hence, it is considered that a high percentage of cellulose is preserved in
cow dung (Joblin et al., 2002; Khalid et al., 2018). The latter explanation tackles the
digestive system and how cows turn the grass they consume into a source of
cellulose. Ruminants such as cows falling under the same family as carabaos
support the capabilities of the animal to turn the grass they eat into the same kind of
fiber since both animals have a specialized stomach that allows this process.

The employment of other sources of fiber for paper product production is in

direct coherence with the purpose, cause, and goal of Cara-board which is to utilize
a waste that excretes greenhouse gases and use it for making a paper product
without the intervention of cutting down trees to maintain the regulators of
temperature and helps in diminishing the effects of Global warming. Human beings
have been one of the main causes of this significant increase in climate change
through industries without measuring the consequences of these acts as well as the
poor management that has been given for years to the fauna and flora, thus causing
great disasters and raising temperatures with carbon dioxide produced by man that
is reflected on the planet through heat waves, droughts, strong storms, food
shortages, death of animals (Zuñiga Herera, 2023). Envisioning the ultimate goal of
bringing into fruition the utilization of other sources of fiber for paper production and
reducing the cutting down of trees which is the major cause of Global warming and
initiating the act by producing a paper product using animal excretes that emanates
greenhouse gases and innovating the material into a possible source of living is an
approach that caters and solves one of the recurring predicaments of society.

Product Benefits

Cara-board visually represents and functions as a chalkboard allowing chalk-

like products to be drawn and written on the product. The compressed thick layer of
Cara-board may also function as a corkboard enabling the attachment and
presentation of various information. With the assistance of adhesive products, Cara-
board may also operate as a packaging box allowing the storage of other items.
Having the capability of any other paper or pulp products, Cara-board may be cut
and maneuvered into different forms, shapes, and sizes.

Cara-board is an eco-friendly paper product that may be recycled and reused,

minimizing the effects of natural resource extraction due to industrialization.
Economic growth and associated urbanization and industrialization trends stimulate
demand for national resource extraction and consumption, resulting in environmental

unsustainability (Baloch et al., 2019). Industrialization's unsustainability aspect is

evident in the environmental repercussions that are evident in the society of the
current generation. Extreme heat waves affect individuals, resulting in worse health
conditions and diseases. The severe environmental condition may be attributed to
the lackluster number of trees due to their usage in the papermaking industry.

Cara-board uses an alternative material to eliminate the intervention of

cutting trees, and this utilization also helps diminish the greenhouse gases evident in
the cattle industry. The cattle industry alone contributes about 15% of the GHG
produced annually while human sludge contributes approximately another 18%
(Prescient & Strategic Intelligence and Trove Research, 2021). Utilizing carabao
manure as the primary solute for producing a Cara-board efficiently and effectively
draws out from the commercial way of making a paper product benefitting society
and the environment. Sarkodie (2018) argues that human activities, including mining,
deforestation, and chainsaw operations, are among the major causes of natural
habitat destruction, and water, soil, and air pollution. Hence, producing an innovative
product that caters to the needs of society and the natural environment not only
satisfies one segment of the world but the majority of it.

Differentiation

Cara-board uses carabao excretes as its primary solute containing grass

fibers, unlike commercial paperboard that utilizes wooden fibers. The product also
emanates a Sampaguita smell due to the fragrance of the flower indirectly applied to
the board, making it unique to other scented paper products that are directly
modified by chemicals and other ingredients. It also provides multifunctionality due
to the versatility it has. The production follows a fundamental process that eliminates
the intervention of cutting trees to gather a source of cellulose fiber, in contrast, it

uses the excretion of carabaos which not only diminishes the source of greenhouse
gases but also allows an alternative material to be a source of cellulose. Lastly, the
materials are composed of natural resources and wastes, which contributes to a
better cause of decreasing greenhouse gasses from the excretes, eliminating the
usage of trees for paper product production, and ultimately the preservation of the
environment and nature.

Production Process

Collecting

Gather and collect the carabao manure in one container, removing

unnecessary constituents such as worms and grass. Collect the remains of an
already chopped-down banana tree and cut down a portion of its trunk, chop it down
into manageable pieces. Separate the solutes in different containers.

Cleaning

Soak the gathered carabao manure in a container filled with water for about
half an hour, this softens the carabao manure, allowing manageable segregation of
debris stuck in the material. Cleaning it by hand allows an easier management and
segregation of debris and other foreign materials stuck on the solute.

Crush and pour carabao manure into a stainless-steel stock pot and fill it
almost full of water. Put the mixture of carabao manure and water to a boil
continuously crushing the excrete while stirring the pot filled with the mixture for
about 20 to 30 minutes.

After boiling, pour and strain the carabao manure by catching it using a cotton
cloth and simultaneously running it with cold water to avoid burns and injury that the
hot material may cause.

Compress and collect the carabao manure now converted into a pulp readily
available for the preceding processes. Squeezing the caught pulp by hand allows
better grip and stronger compression.

The banana tree trunks are meticulously cleaned, removing any unwanted
debris.

Mixing

The cleaned banana tree trunks are chopped into manageable pieces and
turned into a mixture by putting them in a blender filled with an equal amount of
solvent. The carabao manure turned into pulp is then crushed and mixed with water
by blending the mixture in a blender. Combine the mixture of carabao manure and
banana tree trunks by blending it all and storing it in one container. The mixture and
computation of the product is as follows:

 400g Carabao Manure

 100g Banana Tree Trunks

 500mL Water

Computation:

 1mL of Water for every 1g of Solvent (400g Carabao Manure + 100g Banana
Tree Trunks = 500mL Water)

 25g of Banana Tree Trunks for every 100g of Carabao Manure (400g
