Electronics I – Week #4 Assignment 1

DC Analysis of Transistor and DC Load Line

1. For the common emitter circuit with base biasing shown below (see figure 1) the
parameters are:
VBB = 4 V, RB = 220 kΩ, RC = 2 kΩ, VCC = 10 V, VBE(on) = 0.7 V, and β = 200. Calculate
the base current (IB), collector current (IC), emitter currents (IE), the VCE voltage and the
transistor power dissipation (PT). Show all work.
VBB−VBE 4−0.7
IB = = =¿ 0.000015 = 15µA
RB 220000
IC = β(IB) = 200*0.000015 = 0.003 = 3mA
IE = IB + IC = 0.000015+0.003 = 0.003015 = 3.02mA
VCE = VCC – (IE*RC) = 10 – (0.003015*2000) = 3.97V
PT = VCE*IC = 3.97*0.003 = 0.01191 = 12mW

2. In the Common Collector circuit with base bias and emitter feedback shown in Figure 2,
calculate the following (refer to the weekly content Lecture entitled Sample Problem for Base
Bias with Emitter Feedback):
V CC −VBE 9−0.7
IB = = =¿ 0.0000415 = 41.5µA
RB+ ℜ(1+ β ) 10 0000+2000(1+ 49)
IE = (1+β)IB = (1+49)(0.0000415) = 0.002075 = 2.08mA
VCE =VCC – VE = 9 – 4.15 = 4.85V
VE = IE *RE = 0.002075*2000 = 4.15V
VB. = VBE + VE = 0.7 + 4.15 = 4.85V

3. For the Common Base circuit with emitter biasing shown in Figure 3 below, calculate its
quiescent or DC working point (Vce and Collector current). Show all work.
VCE = VCC = 20V
VCC 20
IC = = = 0.0066667 = 6.67mA
R2 3000
