General* Application Guide for Shell Engine Oils

AUTOMOTIVE LUBRICANTS
Donax* TC – Premium transmission fluid
for caterpillar Powershift transmissions –
caterpillar TO-4 approved 1.31
AUTOMOTIVE
highway trucks
• Donax TC exceeds the requirements of Caterpillar TO-2 and
TO-4 for powershift transmissions
• Donax TC 10W and 30 are Allison C-3/C-4 approved
Advantages:
• Improved Transmission Life – a key factor limiting
transmission life in modern equipment is the compatibility of
new friction materials such as F-37 and Rayflex with engine
oils
• Active nitrogen containing components commonly found in
many engine oils, can cause these friction materials to become
brittle and break up resulting in reduced transmission life.
Donax TC is formulated without aggressive nitrogen
containing components to ensure maximum life of clutch
frictional materials
• Superior Frictional Characteristics – improved efficiency
– a second concern being encountered with newer
transmissions, particularly in transmissions with VCTC’s, is
the phenomenon of “torque convertor stall”. Effectively the
clutch slips at heavy loads limiting the performance of the
equipment. Donax TC is specially balanced formulation with
frictional characteristics to help consistently maximize the
output of your equipment, particularly when moving heavy
loads
• Versatility – Donax TC is formulated as an SAE 10W, 30,
and 50 to provide you with seasonal flexibility. These oils are
not formulated with Viscosity Index Improvers and hence
comply with Caterpillar’s lubrication recommendations.
(Multi-graded oils are no longer recommended for powershift
transmissions by Caterpillar)

requirements as well as Caterpillar TO-2 specifications for
powershift transmissions. Caterpillar’s TO-4 transmission
fluid specifications do not include the opportunity for formal
approval of multigrade oils, however Caterpillar does have
recommendations for the use of multigrades provided they
use the same performance additive package as approved single
grades.
Advantages:
• Improved Transmission Life - A key factor limiting
transmission life in modern equipment is the compatibility of
new friction materials such as F-37 and Rayflex with engine
oils. Active nitrogen containing components commonly
found in many engine oils can cause these friction materials
to become brittle and break up resulting in reduced
transmission life.
• Donax TC Multi-season is formulated without aggressive
nitrogen containing components to ensure maximum life of
clutch frictional materials.
• In addition Donax TC Multi-season is formulated to provide
superior anti-wear protection, anti-foaming characteristics
and oxidation stability resulting in longer equipment life.

Applications:
• Steel gear transmissions
• Industrial gear drives where a full EP performance is required
• Bearings
• Circulating and splash lubricated systems
• Omala F should not be used for automotive hypoid gears.
The appropriate Spirax* Oil should be used for this purpose
Advantages:
• Excellent load carrying and anti-friction characteristics –
reduces gear tooth and bearing wear on both steel and bronze
components
• Outstanding oxidation and thermal stability – withstands
high thermal loading and resists the formation of sludge
and other harmful products of oxidation. Extended oil life,
even with bulk oil temperatures up to 100°C in certain
applications
• Effective corrosion inhibition – protects both steel and
bronze components, even in the presence of contamination
by water and solids
• Lead-free – operator acceptability. Reduced health risk
• Resistant to micro-pitting – standard setting anti micro-
pitting performance to reduce the risk of premature failure
through surface distress

Applications:
• Industrial hydraulic systems
• Mobile hydraulic fluid power transmission systems
• Marine hydraulic systems
Advantages:
• Energy efficiency: The formulation adopted allows to achieve
energy savings, on average up to 8% as demonstrated in
field trials, thanks to the following three elements: the fluid
density, the frictional properties and high viscosity index. The
first two are the drivers for systems operating in a stationary
condition while the third one playa a key role in the case
of variable operating conditions. Tellus EE hydraulic fluids
contain a patented additive technology
• Help the environment: Achieving energy efficiency means
reducing CO2 emissions thus contributing to reducing
environmental impact
• Reduce maintenance costs Tellus EE hydraulic fluids offer
outstanding performance in all the properties relevant to an
hydraulic fluid, enabling you to operate your machinery in a
reliable and efficient manner
As with other fluids in the next generation Tellus range, use
of Tellus EE hydraulic fluids helps you minimize problems
such as: sludge build up, valve sticking, increased wear, filter
blocking, corrosion and contamination
By using Tellus EE you can therefore: guard against
equipment damage (pump, filter, seals, valve, hose)
avoiding premature failure and replacement thus increasing
productivity while reducing maintenance costs
• Longer oil drain intervals: The usage of synthetic base fluids
in the formulation increases the oil drain interval achievable

Advantages:
• Outstanding piston cleanliness – free-running piston
rings, even under difficult operational conditions, ensuring
maximum reliability
• Exceptional protection against bore polishing – control
of blow-by and oil consumption, preserving engine
efficiency. SHPDO type oils are preferred by many engine
manufacturers to guard against bore polishing
• Exceptional engine cleanliness – ability to retain high levels of
soot safely in suspension, even with extended drain intervals
• Oxidation resistance twice that of conventional oils – ability
to withstand high temperatures for longer, in severe service or
with extended drain intervals
• High reserve alkalinity – a TBN-E (total base number) of
17 to neutralise acids and provide corrosion protection until
the next drain interval, even with the higher sulphur levels
sometimes found in marine distillate fuels

Grease Thickeners
Lithium soap greases have been around for many years and
their multipurpose nature allows them to satisfy over 80% of all
applications. However, for severe applications, other technologies may
have advantages.
354
APPENDIX
Grease Compatibility
“RULE OF THUMB”
As a general rule of thumb, it is best to assume that all different types
and brands of greases are NOT COMPATIBLE with each other.
When changing from one grease to another it is best to completely
clean the grease cavity and lubricated surfaces. If this is not possible, a
thorough purge of the system should be performed.
355
APPENDIX
NLGI Grease Grading System/Service Classifications
Note: Gaps exist (in the penetration numbers) between the official NLGI
grades. This allows for unofficial half grades e.g.) a grease with a
penetration of 300mm could be designated as a 1.5 grade.
