The present volume is the twentieth in the series Rutgers University Stud-
ies in Classical Humanities, frequently referred to as RUSCH. With this
volume the series returns to its roots. In March of 1981, a conference was
held at Rutgers University on an epitome of Stoic and Peripatetic ethics
that is preserved for us by Stobaeus and commonly attributed to Arius
Didymus, the court philosopher of Caesar Augustus. The proceedings of
the conference became volume I in the RUSCH series. It was published in
1983 and carried the title On Stoic and Peripatetic Ethics: The Work of Arius
Didymus. Now thirty-three years later, RUSCH has returned to the work
of Didymus. Volume XX contains the proceedings of a second conference
on Didymus held at Rutgers in 2014. This time the conference narrowed its
focus to the Peripatetic portion of Didymus’ epitome. That is announced in
the title of the present volume: Arius Didymus on Peripatetic Ethics, House-
hold Management, and Politics. Nevertheless, issues concerning the Stoa
are not entirely ignored. Indeed, how could they be, since Zeno founded
the Stoa c. 301–300, when Theophrastus had succeeded Aristotle as head
of the Peripatos. Interaction, even rivalry, between the two schools was
inevitable and is reflected in what Didymus records concerning Peripatetic
doctrine.

the authors decide. In regard to citations in Greek, I have allowed both the
use of Greek font and the use of transliteration. Several considerations may
be mentioned. On the one hand, the transliteration of individual words
and phrases has gained wide acceptance; it makes easier the preparation of
a finished manuscript; the reader who has little Greek but is familiar with
individual words is not put off by transliterated words and phrases. Indeed,
he is apt to welcome them as informative in a given context. On the other
hand, long stretches of transliterated Greek may have a negative effect not
only on the Greekless reader but also on persons who have a decent com-
mand of ancient Greek. Better to print the Greek in full and add a transla-
tion. The addition may seem unnecessary to the person who prides himself
on his command of ancient Greek, but as editor I am aiming at a wide audi-
ence: not only philologists but also educated persons who have a healthy
interest in Greek ethics, household management and politics.

Introduction
1. Authorship1
The work of a certain philosopher named Didymus figures among the
numerous sources that Ioannes Stobaeus used to compile his anthology of
ancient wisdom in the fifth century AD.2 This evidence is supported by a
lemma in Stobaeus’ Anthology 4.39.28 (918.15–919.6 Ηense) which is intro-
duced by the words “From the Summary of Didymus” ( Ἐκ τῆς Διδύμου
Ἐπιτομῆς). Since the part prefaced with these words appears also in the
Peripatetic doxography of ethics in book 2, chapter 7 of Stobeaus’ work (in
the part where the Peripatetic conception of eudaimonia is treated), Didy-
mus may be securely identified with the author of the whole doxographical
piece on Peripatetic ethics entitled Of Aristotle and the Other Peripatetics

The title of the Peripatetic account of ethics in book 2 is elliptical and calls for
comment. Sharples (2010) 111 translates the title “From Aristotle and the Other Peripatetics
on Ethics.” That translation invites comparison with the lemma in Stobaeus book 4, which
translates “From the Summary of Didymus” (see above). Nevertheless, an alternative
is preferred by Fortenbaugh, who points to the title of the account of Stoic ethics earlier
in book 2. The syntax is quite similar (n.b., the use of double genitives, with which both
titles begin, and the Stoic title makes explicit reference to opinions, dogmata [57.13–14]).
Understanding dogmata in the Peripatetic title gives the translation “[The Opinions] of
Aristotle and the Other Peripatetics on Ethics,” which suits the doxography. That translation
will appear in the text translation below on p. 15.

with alien terms, in a way that altered the original meaning of the text.
The hermeneutical fallacy that underlies this is that the use of common
vocabulary means also identity in doctrine. This however does not do
justice to the spirit of the author of the doxography; he might not have
intended to reconstruct the ethical teaching of the Peripatos according
to modern (historical) standards, but may well have wanted to convey an
updated view of Peripatetic ethics by use of terminology which had become
in his time common currency.

He says that moral character (ēthos) receives its name from
habit (ethos). For the things whose beginnings and seeds we 117.1
have from nature are perfected through habits and the right
upbringing. That is also why ethics (ēthikē) is the discipline of
habits (ethikē) and occurs only in living beings and, above all, in
humans. For other beings acquire their qualities by being habit- .5
uated not by reason but by necessity, whereas human beings on
the other hand are formed by reason through habituation, when
the irrational part of their soul is disposed according to reason.
The part of the soul which is called irrational is not the one that
is absolutely deprived of reason but the one which can obey rea-
son; of this kind is the emotional (part of the soul) and, as such,
it is also capable of receiving virtue. .10
For the soul has a rational and an irrational (part); rational
is the judging (part of the soul), irrational the impulsive one.
The part of the rational (soul) which contemplates eternal and
divine things is called scientific, whereas the one which is con-
cerned with human things and actions is the deliberative. And .15
of the irrational part, the one which desires things that are in
our power is the appetitive part, whereas the one which is, as
it were, defensive toward one’s neighbors is the spirited (part).
Therefore, there are also two kinds of virtues, the rational and
the irrational, since we are by nature inclined toward both con- 118.1
templation and action. That is also the reason why moral virtue
is not a science but a disposition of choosing noble things.
And virtue is perfected through three things: nature, habit, .5
reason. For as humans are different from other living creatures
in body and soul by being between the immortal and the mor-
tal, they form a community with both: with rational beings by .10
the divinity of their soul and with the irrational by the mortality
of their body; accordingly, they desire the perfection of both
(i.e., body and soul).

Sec. 2 Ts And first of all, they desire existence, for they have an affin-
ity toward themselves by nature; that is why they experience a
suitable enjoyment among things according to nature and are
annoyed by things which are contrary to nature. For they take .15
care to preserve their health and they desire pleasure and strive
for life, because these things are according to nature and choice-
worthy and good for their own sake. Conversely, they reject and
avoid illness, suffering and destruction because they are against .20
nature and in themselves to be avoided and bad. For our body is 119.1
dear, and our soul is dear, and so are their parts and their capac-
ities and activities dear; in forethought for the preservation of
these lies the origin of impulse, appropriate action and virtue.
For if there were absolutely no possibility of error regard-
ing our choices and avoidances of the things mentioned, and we .5
were constantly achieving good things and never had to share
in bad ones, we would never have sought the right and infallible
selection among these. But, since frequently out of ignorance
we are deceived in relation to the choices and avoidances and .10
we dismiss good things while we approach bad ones as though
they were good, we necessarily had to seek for a secure knowl-
edge for our judgment; since we found it to be consonant with
nature, on account of the magnificence of its activity, we named
it virtue and admiring it as unique, we valued it above all other
things. Our actions and the so-called appropriate actions have
their origin in the selection of things according to nature and .15
the rejection of things contrary to nature; that is why also the
right actions and the mistaken ones occur among these and
relate to them. For nearly the whole outline of (the ethics of)
this school derives from these, as I will show very briefly. .20
Sec. 3 Ts For it is known from manifest facts that children are choice-
worthy for their parents not only out of need but also for their

PREFACE
No figure in the gallery of Early Victorian writers presents a character
so charming or so tenderly pathetic as that of Mary Russell Mitford.
Added to these characteristics is the fact that her life was, in reality,
a tragedy brought about by her blind devotion and self-sacrifice to an
object which we are forced to regard as altogether unworthy.
Miss Mitford’s name is not a familiar one to this generation and it is
with the desire to alter this that the following pages have been
written. It would be impossible, within the compass of a book of this
size, to show forth Miss Mitford’s life in its entirety: what we have
done has been to select from the records of her life and work such
incidents and such friendships as seemed to us to portray her most
faithfully. Whether we have succeeded must be left to the reader to
judge.
In the compilation of the book many sources of information have
been drawn upon and the author desires to acknowledge his
indebtedness to all who have so kindly helped him in his labours.
Chief among these has been Lady Russell of Swallowfield, who, in
addition to supplying much material, has made the author still further
indebted by her acceptance of the dedication of the book. Miss Rose
G. Kingsley has also to be thanked for copies of letters written by
Miss Mitford to her father, Charles Kingsley, who lies buried at
Eversley, in the neighbourhood with which the book deals largely.
