III. CONTENT
There are skills that everyone needs to acquire and master for him or her to
communicate effectively. We call them “macro skills.” Macro skills refer to the
fundamental abilities necessary for effective communication across different
modalities or channels. These skills are reading, writing, listening, speaking and
viewing. They are commonly called as the Five Macro Skills of Communication.
These “language macro skills” is divided into “productive and “receptive” skills.
Mufidah 2019 (Roberts 1990) state that preservice teachers or teacher
candidates should be knowledgeable and should have good ability in listening,
reading, speaking and writing.
Productive Skills
It involves actively producing language or communication. These skills require
the individual to create and convey messages effectively.

Speaking
•Speaking is done through the vocalization communication of human.
• Speaking depends on the context where in communication will take place.
•Speaking can be formal or informal.
•Speaking skills are vital for effective communication, and public speaking
interpersonal presentations,
Speaking English language skill is one of the important of four language skills to
be developed as a means of effective communication in both first and second
language learning context. Effective communication by mean of speaking usually
creates a number of benefits for both speakers and business organizations for
example effective speaking skill results in achievements during ceremonial speaking
activities, job training, activities, job interview, and other business purposes (Osborn,
et. al 2008). Speaking is an interactive process of constructing meaning that involves
producing and receiving and processing information.

Writing
Writing process symbols is the using to express of thoughts, ideas, and
information coherently and persuasively through written language.
Tompkins (2004) says that writing process resembles a road map, actions and
thoughts can be monitored right from the beginning till the end. He further says that
a stage from this process can be skipped and reached to later on but cannot be
skipped altogether. In order to think creatively, it should be given opportunity to see
world through windows and observe it and can write creatively without any fear.
Mainly, there are five stages of writing process, any stage can be skipped
and returned to later. These are: Prewriting, Drafting, Revising, Editing and
Publishing. Learning the writing process is important.

Receptive Skills
Receptive skills involve understanding and interpreting incoming
communication or language. These skills require the individual to comprehend and
make meaning of messages received from others.
Listening
Listening is the ability to accurately receive and interpret messages in the
communication process.
There are three common modes of listening: competitive, passive and active.
• Passive Listening
It Is listening without reacting: Allowing someone to speak, without
interrupting. Not doing anything else at the same time.
•Active Listening
A way of listening that focuses entirely on what the other person is
saying and confirms understanding of both the content of the message and
the emotions and feelings underlying the message to ensure that
understanding is accurate.
• Competitive or combative
Listening happens when we are more interested in promoting our own
point of view than in understanding or exploring someone else’s view.

Good ability in listening means having competence to comprehend

information during listening activities or transfer the information in written or oral
communication. It relates to the ability of understanding, communicating, and
responding what is listened. Nation and Jonathan (2009:38) state that listening is a
bridge to learn a language. Having good ability in listening is one of the main skills
that has to be mastered by learners because it tightly relates to the communication
process. Harmer (2007:133) also states that listening can be helpful for students in
running successful communication. The students’ communicative competence
successfully runs together with good listening skill of students. Bulley-Allen (1995) in
Flowedew (2010:159) state that listening is dominant activity in daily communication
(40%), 35% for speaking, 16% for reading, and 9% on writing. In other words,
communication will not run well if it is not supported by good ability in listening.
Listening activities do not only need the ability in mastering basic language
knowledge and knowing various issues, but also have to prepare listening strategies
in order to help in figuring out some problems that will face in the process of listening.

Reading
It Involves written understanding texts, information, interpreting and
extracting meaning from written language. It encompasses skills such as
comprehension, analysis, and critical thinking.
In acquiring excellent communication skills, reading competence is one of the
skills that has to be developed. Reading skills becomes very important in the world of
education. Poor reading comprehension is cited as a fundamental feature of
academic underperformance.

presentations Broadens the ways in which students can understand and
