6.6.3 Angle of inclination of rolls

6.6.3.1 Troughing and impact idlers (see figures 10, 11 and 17)

The angle of inclination of the outer rolls to the horizontal (see α in figures 10, 11 and 17) shall, subject
to a tolerance of ± 0,5°, be

a) in the case of offset idlers: 20°, 25°, 35° or 45°, as required (see annex A);

b) in the case of three-roll in-line idlers: 20°, 35° or 45°, as required (see annex A); and

c) in the case of two-roll V-form trough idlers: a maximum of 20°, as required (see annex A).

The angle of inclination (0,5 α) of the inner rolls of a five-roll offset idler (see figures 10(c) and 11(c))
shall, subject to a tolerance of ± 0,5°, be half the angle of inclination of the outer rolls.

6.6.3.2 Picking idlers (see figure 16)

In the case of picking idlers, the outer (wing) rolls shall be series 25 of diameter 127 mm, and the angle
of inclination of the outer rolls to the horizontal shall, subject to a tolerance of ± 0,5°, be 20°, and the
lower edge of the outer roll shall be 13 mm below the top of the horizontal roll.

6.6.3.3 Transition idlers

Transition idlers may have angles of inclination other than those given in 6.6.3.1, but the actual angles
shall be within 0,5° of the designed angles. The angles of inclination of outer rolls may be adjustable.

6.6.4 Forward tilt

Troughed idlers shall be tilted forward in the direction of the belt travel, in order to assist training, as
specified (see annex A). The forward tilt of outer rolls shall be the minimum commensurate with the
application as shown in table 7. The forward tilting of inclined rolls is not applicable to reversible
conveyors. (In the case of five-roll idlers the forward tilt on the inner wing rolls shall be half of that of the
outer wing rolls.)

face, when the rolls are aligned parallel to each other, shall be 30 mm ± 6 mm.

6.6.8 Bracket spacing

The support slot bracket mountings for both offset and in-line rolls shall be so positioned that the

Annex C
(informative)

Quality verification of conveyor belt idlers

C.1 When a purchaser requires ongoing verification of the quality of conveyor belt idlers, it is
suggested that, instead of concentrating solely on evaluation of the final product, he also direct his
attention to the manufacturer's quality system. In this connection it should be noted that SANS 9001
covers the provision of an integrated quality system.

C.2 If no information about the implementation of quality control or testing during manufacture is
available to help in assessing the quality of a lot, and a purchaser wishes to establish by inspection and
testing of samples of the final product whether a lot (as defined in SANS 1313-3) of the idlers complies
with this part of SANS 1313, use the sampling plan given in SANS 1313-3

The objective of the SABS Standards Division is to develop, promote and maintain South African
National Standards. This objective is incorporated in the Standards Act, 2008 (Act No. 8 of 2008).

Amendments and Revisions
