Chapter - 1
Introduction
1.1 Introduction:

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is an instant real-time payment system developed by

National Payments Corporation of India facilitating inter-bank transactions. The
interface is regulated by the Reserve Bank of India and works by instantly transferring
funds between two bank accounts on a mobile platform.

UPI is a brought together stage that brings together unique financial highlights and
administrations under one rooftop. To send and get cash, you really need is a UPI ID
and a PIN. A cell phone and a virtual instalment address can be utilized to make bank-
to-bank instalments (UPI ID).

According to the data provided by RBI number of E-payments or non-cash transactions

stands to 6 per person per year.

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has taken systematic steps to promote digital payments in
India and created National Payment Corporation of India(NPCI) as an umbrella
organization to develop low cost retail digital payment system.

1.1.1 What is UPI (Unified Payment Interface)?

UPI is a single platform that merges various banking services and features under one
umbrella. A UPI ID and PIN are sufficient to send and receive money. Real-time bank-
to bank payments can be made using a mobile number or virtual payment address (UPI
ID).

1.1.2 What is UPI ID and PIN?

A UPI ID is a unique identification for a bank account that can be used to send and receive
funds. UPI PIN is a 4-digit personal identification number that must be entered to authorize
the transfer of money via UPI. The PIN can be chosen by the account holder.

1.1.3 Working Mechanism of UPI:

UPI can be used for sending and receiving money who have smart phone with internet
connection and bank account.
First Step:

To get started first user has to download UPI application from google playstore or any from
any 3rd party source.

Second Step:

Then by using your mobile number, Bank accounts linked to your mobile number will be
searched. Then by entering last 6 digits of your Debit card, your bank will registered in UPI
application.

Third Step:

A VPA (virtual payment address) is to be created by user in next step. The VPA is a unique
address like email id and every will get unique id and it is attached to their Bank account and
M Pin is set for Bank account.
1.2 Review of Literature
In this study the researcher aims to identify the customer preference towards
unified payment interface and to know the impact of unified payment interface in
customer satisfaction. The researcher’s find out the below review of literature which
is relevant for in this study.

Babita Singla, Manish Bansal (2015) In their research found that shoppers are happy
with plastic use and non-platinum card clients fascinated to use the card for buys and
mean to utilize the ars is not so distant future. However, the Banks and other financial
institutions are motivating the use of plastic cards.
.

Rathore (2016) stated that digital payment using wallet was highly convenient for
consumers in purchasing products through online without physical movement across
places.

Dr. Stitch Shweta Rathore (2016) "Appropriation of Cashless transactions By

Consumers" her investigations disclose to us computerized wallets are rapidly getting
to be standard method of online installment. Customers are embracing advanced wallets
at end unfathomably quick pace, to a great extent because of comfort and convenience.

Somanjoli Mohapatra (2017) In their study reported that the single interface across
all NPCI systems besides creating interoperability and superior customer experience.
The UPI seeks to make money transfers easy, quick and hassle free. The proliferation
of smart phones, the availability of an online verifiable identity, universal access to
banking and the introduction of biometric sensors in phones will proactively encourage
electronic payment systems for ushering in a less-cash society in India.

Radhika Basavaraj Kakade, Prof. Nupur A. Veshne (2017) In their study reported
that the UPI has made digital transaction for individuals as easy as sending text
messages. Service is available 24X7, not like RTGS or NEFT which don’t work on
holidays or during non-banking hours. This will bring enormous efficiency in the
system and help India become a truly cashless economy.
Roshna Thomas, Dr. Abhijeet Chatterjee (2017) The study reported that UPI is a
tool with compatible features that can make monetary transactions easy and
affordable to the customers though it is difficult to sideline the challenges. A strong
Aadhar platform (UID) combined with statistics for the country pertaining to
increased financial inclusion, Smartphone adoption and telecom subscription indicate
positive prospects for UPI whereas competition from mobile wallets and possible
cases of failure from banks to overcome technical errors especially relating to the
front-end platform designed by them may negatively impact the scope of this
innovative payment tool.

Ravish Rana (2017) In their study reported that adoption of digital payment is
influenced by the education level of the customer. If a person has studied beyond
matriculation and internet savvy, he or she will be inclined to use the digital payment
mode. It was also found that in the areas/region where education level is high such as
Delhi NCR and other metropolitan area, the possibility of acceptance of digital
payment is much higher. The growth of users of Smartphone and internet penetration
in such area also facilitated the adoption of digital payment.

1.3 Importance of Study:

Unified payment interface is the one of the recent innovation introduced by national payment
corporation of India. After the implementation of UPI there is a dramatic changes in the
payment method. Hence it is important to know the benefits and drawback of UPI services and
customer perception towards new innovation adopted by the national payment corporation. In
this study the researcher aims to identify the customer preference towards unified payment
interface and to know the impact of unified payment interface in customer satisfaction.
1.4 Objectives of Study

1.To analyse the impact of UPI in customer satisfaction.

2. To identify the variance between UPI services and Traditional services.

3. To identify if there is any relationship between respondent’s education and

occupation towards UPI services.

1.5 Research Methodology

The data is based on both primary and secondary source of information. Data collection tool
for the primary data was a structured questionnaire with a set of multiple questions. The
questionnaire related to research study was circulated online to gather all relevant information
from the targeted respondents. Convenient Sampling method was used on targeted respondents
who were surveyed through structured questionnaire. Respondents include most of the college
students who use digital payments at various outlets and for inter- bank payment. Certain useful
finding were made from Secondary Data collected using previous research study on similar
topics and other websites.

Sampling unit:

This was to define the target population to be surveyed. The sampling unit for the research
was the population using digital payment and the target unit was the youth and young adults.

Sample size:

The sample size decided in this research was 125.

Sampling procedure:

For the collection of primary data a well-structured questionnaire was floated among
different sects of population in different parts of India.

Conclusion & Suggestions

3.1 Conclusion

This report has focused on various economical factors that could directly impact UPI (Unified
Payment Interface) in its acceptance and growth. It was found that most of the people use UPI
for people to merchant more than the people to people. UPI has played a crucial role in promote
inclusion and growth of weaker sections of economy. UPI is one such innovation that promotes
the digital economy of the country. Report also concludes that UPI gives safer mode of digital
transactions.

UPI aims to simplify and to provide a single interface to money transfer easy, quick and hassle
free. These unique features of UPI motivate the people to use UPI. The use of smart phones,
the availability of online verification, universal access to banking will encourage people to use
UPI Transactions and research revealed that people have positive attitude towards the UPI
Transactions and for making economy cash free.

Despite all the claims, most preferred mode of payment will remain cash and cards. Although
awareness and usage of online transactions has increased by the people of all age groups, but
more awareness need to be spread about UPI. The frequency of using digital payment is hights
amongst the age group of 18-25, least amongst the age group of 25-35.

The new technology faces challenges that need to be addressed and taken care of like problem
in verification of data, network issue, etc. People refers UPI Transactions over Traditional
Banking Services for the reasons like faster transaction, more convenient, easy to do, etc.
People thinks that their occupation affects their usage UPI Transactions.

Now UPI has become the part of people’s life. It will be very beneficial in the growth
perspective of the economy. UPI creates convenience of transaction without knowing bank
details but by knowing only virtual address and phone numbers with high security and simple
process.

We can conclude that UPI will gradually end the cash transactions and reducing the
circulation of currency notes.

This study has been made to understand the perception of consumers towards UPI Transactions
and how UPI services satisfied consumers. From the study it is clear that consumers have
positive attitude towards UPI services. Study also says that there is direct relationship between
the education and occupation of the consumer to the usage of UPI services. Educated persons
are more inclined towards using UPI. The growth of availability of smartphones and network
in various areas also facilitated the adoption of UPI services.
3.2 Suggestions

In order to build a strong base UPI needs to build a strong trust amongst its consumers by
being transparent and by making itself more visible. UPI must take care of some points which
were noticed during survey:

1) It must advertise more and must be stick to the words spoken during advertisement.

2) Special focus should be made on the users needs such that ease and security of the
data of consumer should be priority.

3) UPI needs to conduct a series of surveys to understand their satisfactions level and
their fears while using UPI.
