KUSHANA DYNASTY
• The exact ruling period is not known but believed to
have ruled from 1st Century BCE – 4th Century CE.

• This dynasty belonged to Yu-chi/ Tocharians, which is


a tribe in western China.

• They defeated Sakas and Parthians and got settled in


Gandhara region.

• It spread to encompass much of modern-day territory


of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and northern India,

• Founder - Kujul Kadphises- I (15-65)AD.

• After him, throne was ascended by Vima Taktu, also


known as Sadaskana.

• Then his son, Vim- Kadphises-II issued large number


of gold coins.

• Then his son Kanishka, ascended the throne
around 78AD.
• He founded the Saka era, in 78 AD, which is the
official calendar of Govt of India.
• Capital – Purushpur (Peshawar).
• He is also known as ”Second Ashoka”, because
he converted to Buddhism and spread
Buddhism in most of the China.
• He also built Shah-ji-Dhari (A Stupa), near
Peshawar.
• His court poet was — ”Ashvagosha”, who wrote
Buddhacharita - Biography of Bhudda.

• Kanishka was the first king who opted for Mahayana Buddhism .

• Buddhism is divided into two parts:

1. Mahayana Bhuddhism (Idol worship)

2. Hinayana Bhuddhism (No idol worship, Deliver sermon)

• Kanishka organized 4th Bhuddhist Council in Kandulvana Kashmir, 500 monks participated
in it.

• So, from than there was the formal rise in Mahayana Bhuddhism.

• Kanishka also captured silk route.

• Other rulers of Kushan Dynasty were:
• Huviska, Vasiskha and Vasudeva-I.
• After the death of Vasudeva-I , the empire
was split into many western and eastern
segments and than was succeeded by many
foreign invaders especially, Sassanid
invasion by Shapur-I, with his father -
Ardashir-I.
• Following territory losses in the west
(Bactria lost to the Kushano-Sasanians), and
in the east (loss of Mathura to the Gupta
Empire), several "Little Kushans" are known,
who ruled locally in the area of Punjab with
their capital at Taxila.
