DESIGN ASSIGNMENT – CIV 7476 FAECAL SLUDGE

MANAGEMENT
DEADLINE: Not later than 2nd April 2024

IMPORTANT NOTES:
1) You will work in pairs assigned to you and each pair will prepare and submit one report.
2) When carrying out the design, calculations must be in sufficient detail to support your
answers.
3) Make the required assumptions to support the design of the plant. Justify and indicate
the source and rationale behind the assumption (where applicable).
4) Prepare a 10 minutes power-point presentation of your design report.
5) An oral assessment will be done on the day of presentation, where each student shall
be examined about the design for 10 minutes.

FAECAL SLUDGE CHARACTERISATION

The Faecal sludge treatment plant is designed based on a peak flow of 400 m3/d. The
characteristics of faecal sludge to be treated in the plant are the ones determined in the
laboratory characterization exercise.

DESIGN TASKS

(1) Basing on the characteristics of faecal sludge, propose a schematic layout of the
treatment plant that will treat FS effluent to discharge standards. The solids are to be
used as a soil conditioner. The proposed location of the plant has no natural wetland in
the vicinity.

(2) Present the design criteria and standards for each of treatment units identified in
question 1.

(3) Determine the dimensions for each of the unit identified. Present the detailed design
calculations used.

(4) Develop an operation and maintenance schedule for the designed treatment units.
