URBAN/CITIES

TRANSPORTATION &
TELECOMMUNICATIONS

WHAT IS URBAN
TRANSPORTATION?
An urban transport system consists of all
elements of transportation, including
infrastructure, rolling stock, and traffic
flows, in a city as a functioning entity. It
aims at supporting transport demands
generated by the diversity of urban
activities in a diversity of urban
contexts.
COMMON TYPES
OF URBAN
TRANSPORTATION
BUSES
Public transportation began in 1826 with
the Omnibus, a horse-drawn carriage.
Since then, modern buses have evolved
from cost-effective transportation to
safe, sustainable, and comfortable modes
of transportation, with the first wide-
scale planning in Paris in 1828.
CITIES WITH BEST BUSES
San Diego’s MTS plans to host a fully zero-
emission fleet by 2040, aiming to reduce
emissions by over 40% and improve the city's
urban design.
Copenhagen, Denmark has the best buses and
transport system. Metro, S-train network,
and harbor busses. From 2019, all public
buses and ferries will use electricity, phasing
out diesel fuel. The A-buses serve at all hours.
The S-buses drive every 5-10 minutes during
rush hour and every 20 minutes outside of
rush hour.
2. LIGHT RAIL TRANSIT SYSTEM
A light rail transit system consists of a
system of railways on which trains are
propelled forward by electrical wires
overhead. This unique transit system is a
popular mode of transportation in large
cities like San Francisco, San Diego,
Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Boston, and
Portland.
LIGHT RAIL TRANSIT SYSTEM
The MAX Light Rail system in Portland,
Oregon, offers a convenient alternative to
personal cars for commuters, addressing the
negative impacts of rapid growth and increased
pollution, while also making the city a more
pleasant place to live.

WA
UB Subway systems offer an underground
S method for commuters to get around their
city. They can transport millions of people
per day in suburban and urban areas.

New York City's iconic public transportation

system, the NYC subway, serves over 5
million daily riders, operating 472 stations
24/7, making it one of the oldest and largest
in the world.
SUBWAYS
Rapid transit in the United Kingdom
consists of four
systems: the London Underground a
nd the Docklands
Light Railway in London; the Tyne an
d Wear Metro in
Tyne and Wear; and the Glasgow Sub
way.
The underground or Tube in London
is the oldest
transport system of its kind in the w
orld. It opened in
1863 with steam locomotives and 272
stations of which
five (Amersham, Chalfont & Latimer
, Chesham, and
Chorleywood on the Metropolitan lin
e and Epping on
the Central line). With 408 active line
s, it covers 253
miles of the city.
COMMUTER TRAIN
Commuter rail system is a transit
system that typically connects a city's
center with its surrounding suburban
areas. Like California's Metrolink, it
connect city centers with suburban
areas. They're popular due to public
interest in reducing traffic, sustainable
commuting, and greener living, with
81% of weekday trips for commuting.
COMMUTER TRAIN

Berlin’s U’Bahn and Tokyo’s

Shinkansen for example leads to
have the most most efficient and
convenient public transportation
systems in the world. Singapore’s
next and then followed by Hong
kong.
COMMUTER TRAIN
Hong Kong (The Mass Transit
Railway - MTR) and Singapore’s
public transit leadership stems
from government policies,
multimodal investments,
thorough planning, and a 'rail plus
property' economic model that
encourages and supports high
levels of transit use.
STREETCARS & TROLLEYS

The streetcar, also known as a trolley or tram, is an

often quaint-looking vehicle that runs on tracks set into the
street. Streetcars run as single units and are powered by an
electric motor.
One of the most famous and beloved streetcar systems
in America is The Market Street Railway in San Francisco,
California. This historical streetcar route draws visitors from
around the world and runs through Market Street,
Fisherman’s Wharf, the Castro District, and more.
STREETCARS & TROLLEYS

The streetcar may seem like a

vestige of a time gone by, yet this
romantic form of public transportation
still heavily contributes to the success of
the Golden City. By providing tourists
and commuters with a unique way to
traverse the city, streetcars reduce the
need for rental cars and personal
vehicles on the famously narrow and
winding streets of San Francisco.
VANPOOL
SERVICES
A vanpool is usually a
collection of up to 15 people who
agree to share the costs of
commuting. If you travel more
than 15 miles to work every day, a
vanpool is a great way to connect
with co-workers and commute
more responsibly.
FERRIS
A ferry is a vessel used to
transport passengers and/or vehicles
across a body of water on a regular,
frequent basis. To ferry means to
transport by ferry, or to transport in
other ferry-like ways, i.e., multiple
short trips.
The Stena Hollandica is the
world's largest combination freight
and passenger ferry. It is the first of
two Ropax vessels constructed at the
Nordic Yards shipyard in Wismar,
Germany.
WATER TAXIS
A water taxi operates much like a
classic car taxi. In waterfront cities,
water taxis, which range in service
capacity from a few people to several
dozen, are a popular way to get around
Water Taxi in Palawan and Puerto Galera the city.
Chicago is known for its bustling
water taxi system, which offers
sightseers a unique way to explore
tourist attractions like Navy Pier.
