A QUICK GUIDE TO THE HIKES
There’s a little something for every kind of hiker within these pages,
and a “best of” list is a good way to get you started. Each list is
ordered by the hike’s number in this book, so the “best of the best”
is not necessarily listed first. By no means are these exhaustive lists
of each category—I could double or triple some of them. These are
simply really good choices. In the main descriptions, check the
symbols at the beginning of each hike to identify more hikes that
feature big trees and wildlife or opportunities for water play and
backpacking.
In August, berries are plentiful and tasty near Placid Lake in the Indian Heaven
Wilderness.
Iron Goat Loop (hike 51): Wander past the concrete walls of
snowsheds and poke your head into tunnels on the path of the
old railway over Stevens Pass.
Fort Flagler State Park (hike 101): Play a great game of hide-
and-seek in one of Fort Flagler’s military batteries. This is
history you can touch.
Fort Cascades Historic Site (hike 123): Long before dams
altered the course and character of the Columbia River, this
place was a flurry of human activity. Walk an interpretive loop
around the site of Cascades Townsite, which was abandoned
after the Great Flood of 1894.
Hiking with kids who have special needs is an enriching and rewarding
experience, but getting everyone outside poses specific challenges and
risks, depending upon the disability. Children with mobility issues may be
confined to a wheelchair or lack muscle tone, coordination, and stamina.
Kids with hearing or sight impairment need trails that may be barrier-free or
provide other sensory experiences. Children with autism, ADHD, or other
sensory issues may have a compromised attention span, have particular
sensitivities to temperature or moisture, or lack common sense.
The good news is that there are plenty of hikes to fit families who have
kids all across the special needs spectrum. Many of the trails in this book
are barrier-free and paved—perfect for kids who have mobility issues. More
than two dozen trails are quite short, which allows for families to take their
time over easy terrain. And there is something here to fit every passion or
obsession—birds, big trees, bugs, water, and much more.

IV LUKU.
Lastaus aiottiin alkaa vasta seuraavana aamuna.
Rakkauskiusottelua!"
huudahti hän yht'äkkiä katkerasti. "Ja tyttö tekeytyi minulle
rakastettavaksi, kiusotellakseen häntä. Mies on huomenna siellä
uudestaan, kun äiti on poissa."
"No niin", sanoi Sam. "Os… Osak… Miksi sitä taas kutsuitkaan,
Dick?"
"Osakeyhtiö."
