Design and Kinematics of Machines

Assignment No: 1
Last date of submission: 3/2/2023
CO1: Recall the fundamentals of design and the theory of kinematics and
mechanisms
1. Define machine design. What is the final outcome of a machine design process?
2. Name the various factors required in designing a product giving a suitable example
(practical examples are required).
3. What are the steps involved in the design of a machine element?
4. Define design synthesis. Explain with a suitable example. Distinguish between design
synthesis and design analysis.
5. What is standardization? Explain the benefits of standards using one example.
6. It is required to standardize load carrying capacities of dumpers in a manufacturing
unit. The maximum and minimum capacities of such dumpers are 40 and 630 kN
respectively. The company is interested in developing seven models in this range.
Specify their load carry capacities.
7. Define ergonomics. Explain man–machine joint system.
8. Explain complete, incomplete, and successfully constrained motion, illustrating your
answer with a neat sketch.
9. Explain the terms:
Lower pair, Higher pair, Kinematic chain, Inversion
10. Describe various inversions of slider-crank mechanisms giving examples.
11. Draw a kinematic diagram and compute the degree of freedom for the can crusher
mechanism (Fig. 1) and the shear press mechanism (Fig. 2)
Fig.1 Fig.2
12. Fig. 3 shows a mechanical press used to exert large forces to insert a small part into a
larger one. Draw a kinematic diagram, using the end of the handle as a point of
interest. Also compute the degrees of freedom.

13. For the example mentioned below, discuss the following points:
Example: Design of Hook and Deign of Pulley
a. Machine Specification
b. Product Requirement
c. Forces (only conceptual explanation)
d. Advanced Application
e. Recent Design modification
