A Pair of Linear equations in Two Variables

1. If you travel by an autorickshaw, the fare for the first kilometre is different from the rate per km
for the remaining distance. The total fare for a distance of 20 km is ₹37.70 and that for a
distance d 26 km is 48.50. Find the fare for the first kilometre and for each successive kilometre.

2. The sum of a two-digit number and the number obtained by reversing the order of its digits is
99, if the digits differ by 3, find the numbers.

3. The sum of a two-digit number and the number formed by interchanging its digits is 110. If 10
is subtracted from the first number, the new number is 4 more than 5 times the sum of the digits
in the first number. Find the first number.

4.. The sum of the numerator and the denominator of a fraction is 8. If 3 is added to both the
numerator and the denominator, the fraction becomes 3/4 Find the fraction.
[Hint: Let the fraction be x/y - Then x + y = 6 and (x + 3)/(y + 3) = 3/4 Solve to get x = 3 and y =
5

5.. A man sold a chair and a table for 1520, thereby making a profit of 25% on the chair and
10% on the table. By selling them together for 1535, he would have made a profit of 10% on the
chair and 25% on the table. Find the cost price of each.

6. A railway half ticket costs half the full fare, but the reservation charges are the same on a half
ticket as on a full ticket. One reserved first class ticket from the station A to B costs ₹2530. Also,
one reserved first class ticket and one reserved first class half ticket form station A to B costs
3810. Find the full first class fare from station A to B, and also the reservation charges for a
ticket. (NCERT Exemplar)

7. On selling a tea-set at 5% loss and a lemon-set at 25% gain, a crockery seller gains 15. If he
sells the tea-set and the lemon-set at 10% gain, he gains 18. Find the actual price of the tea-set
and the lemon-set.

8. The incomes of A and B are in the ratio of 3: 4 and their expenditures are in the ratio of 5: 7. If
each saves 1000, find their incomes.
[Hint: Let the incomes be 3x and 4x and the expenditures be 5y and 7y.
Then, 3x-5y = 1000 and 4x - 7y = 1000.]

9. 2 men and 5 boys can do a piece of work in 4 days, while 4 men and 4 boys can do it in 3
days.
How many days would it take for a man and a boy to do it alone?
[Hint: Let 1 man finish the work in x days and 1 boy finish in y days.]

10. 2 women and 5 men can together finish an embroidery work in 4 days, while 3 women and
6 men can finish it in 3 days. Find the time taken by 1 woman alone to finish the work, and also
that taken by 1 man alone. (NCERT)

11. The area of a rectangle gets reduced by 9 sq m, if its length is reduced by 5 m and breadth
increased by 3 m. If we increase the length by 3 m and breadth by 2 m, the area is increased by
67 sq m. Find the length and breadth of the rectangle.

12. Find the value of k for which the pair of equations 2x +ky = 1 and 3x-5y = 7 has no solution.
