C. Review: (Understanding the English
and Metric systems of
measurement)
Let’s have a short recap of what we
have discussed last meeting. What
are the two (2) types of system of
measurement?
The two (2) types of system of
measurements are the English and
Metric System.
Very Good!
But, what is/are the difference/s of the
two (2) types of systems of
measurements?
Metric System has one basic unit of
measure (meter, gram, liter) while in
the English System, people secured
measurements using body parts such
as foot, yard, inch, etc.)

Precisely!
I have here a list of units of measure. I
want you to classify these units of
measure into Metric or English
System.
(List of units of measure: (Students’ answers:
1. meter
Metric
2. foot
English
3. yard
English
4. millimeter
Metric
5. centigram)
Metric)
Excellent!
You only prove that you already
mastered our previous topic.
B. Establishing a Purpose for the
Lesson
Who among you here heard the songs
“Metric Conversion” and “We Can
Measure”?
(No hands are raising)
It’s okay if you haven’t heard it yet,
because today you are not just going
to hear it but also sing it.
I will divide you into two (2) groups, this
side will be the group 1 and the other
side will be the group 2. Group 1 will
sing the song “Metric Conversion”
after that, Group 2 will sing the song
“We Can Measure”
It seems that you are all excited, so,
Group 1 please stand up. I will sing
each phrase and repeat after me. Is
that okay?
Yes, Sir!

(The teacher will sing each phrase of

the song and the students will repeat
it after him)

Wow, it seems that you are all good

at singing. You may now all take your
seat.

C. Presenting Examples/Instances of
the New Lesson

Today, you will learn how to convert

units of measures in Metric System
and length measure in English
System.

1. (Conversion of units in Metric

System)
(The teacher will show to the
class the arrangement of
prefixes from largest to
smallest)
Class, what could you notice on
this units of metric system?

Prefixes are arranged from largest to

smallest in Metric system.
Good one! You have a keen
eyesight!

This can be easily remembered

by saying/singing “King Henry
Died By Drinking Chocolate
Milk”. The first letter in each
word stands to their equivalent
prefixes. The word “By” can be
substituted by the basic units
(grams, liters, meters)

Now, which is longer: a meter or

kilometer?

Good!
Which is longer: hectometer or
decimeter?
Kilometer, Sir.
Nice!
Which is longer: meter or
centimeter?
Hectometer, Sir.
Excellent!
What is the equivalent of 3
meters in centimeters?
Sir, meter Sir.
Correct!
Since there are 100 centimeters
in a meter, then there are 300
centimeters in 3 meters. 300 centimeters, Sir!

Rules for Conversion

From smaller unit to larger unit.

Move the decimal point of the

given number to be converted k
places to the left, where the
value of k is the number of jumps
from the smaller unit to the larger
unit in the diagram.

From larger unit to smaller unit

Move the decimal point of the

given number to be converted k
places to the right, where the
value of k is the number of jumps
from the larger unit to the smaller
unit in the diagram.

Example 1.
Convert 900 cm to dekameter.
Solution:
Since there are 3 arrows from
centimeter to dekameter and the
movement of decimal is from
right to left because the
conversion of unit is from smaller
to larger unit, then move the
decimal point 3 places to the left.
Therefore, 900 cm = 0.9 dam.

Example 2.
Convert 3 450 dm to kilometer.
Solution:
There are 4 arrows from
decimeter to kilometer and the
movement is also from right to
left since the conversion is from
smaller unit to larger unit.
Therefore, move the decimal
point 4 places to the left. Thus, 3
450 dm = 0.345 km.
1. (Conversion of units in English
System)

English System requires a

conversion ratio (a ratio equal to
one. This ratio carries the names
of the units to be used in the
conversion.
These are the commonly used
conversion ratios for length in the
English System.
12 in. = 1 ft.
3 ft. = 1 yard
1 yard = 36 inches
Example 1:
Convert 84 inches to feet.
Solution:
Multiply 84 in. to its conversion
ratio which is 12 in. = 1 ft.
84∈. 1 ft .
x = 7 ft.
1 12∈.

D. Discussing New Concepts and

Practicing New Skills #1

Convert the following:

1. 350 g to kilogram

350 g x _1 Kg__ = 0.35 kg

1 000 g

2. 850 mm to m

850 mm x ___1 m____ = 0.85 m

1 000 mm

3. 180 in. to yards

180 in. x _1 yard_ = 5 yards

36 in.

4. 3.21 yards to feet

3.21 yards x 3 feet = 9.63 feet

1 yard

E. Discussing New Concepts and

Practicing New Skills #2

To further enhance your

knowledge about conversion,
we will have a group activity
entitled, “Answer Me and You’ll
Get Me”. Your class will be
divided into two groups, same
groupings as you did earlier. I
will show you
questions/problems applied to
real-life. Anyone from your
group could answer. The first
one to answer the
question/problem correctly will
get the prize.

1. How much is 14 mL of Yakult in

deciliter?
0.14 deciliter
2. How many grams of Rebisco
would equal to 150 milligrams?
1.5 grams
3. How many Crimsticks are needed
to lined up to make 1 yard if each
Crimsticks measures 3 inches?

4. If four 5 – peso coin weighs 320g. 12 Crimsticks

How many milligrams do each coin
weighs?

5. 50 peso – bill has a perimeter of 80, 000 mg

360 cm. find its width in
hectometer if its length measures
120 cm.?

0.006 hm
F. Developing Mastery Leads to
Formative Assessment

Let us now have an individual

activity. Direction: Convert the
Following:
1. 560 Liter to mL
560,000 mL
2. 3.5 ft. to inches
42 inches
3. 108 yards to feet
36 feet
4. 6.712 grams to centigrams
671.2 centigrams
5. 9.22 hectometers to decagram
92.2 decagram
Excellent!
G. Finding Practical Applications of
Concepts and Skills in Daily
Living
1. A mother was advised by her
doctor to take 100 mg of vitamin B
supplement every day for three
weeks. How much grams of
vitamin B does the mother need in
all?
2.1 grams

2. How many bottles of regular soft

drink containing 235 ml can be
poured into a family size soft drink
whose capacity is 1 L?
4 bottles

H. Making Generalizations and

Abstractions About the Lesson
Among the two types of systems of
units which one is easier to convert?
Why?
Conversion of measurements from
Metric System is much easier than
English System since you are just
moving the decimal point either from
left or right.
Very well said!
It is also the reason why Metric System
is the official system of measurement
in almost every country in the world.
