The bar chart illustrates how long per week the young people spend time on

several activities between 2002 and 2007.

Overall, the most popular activity over the whole period given was watching
TV, while bowling was the most unpopular. Shopping, going to pubs and discos
and watching TV showed an increase in the number of hours teenagers spent on
these activities. The other entertainments showed a decrease in hours, except
watching DVDs which fluctuated.

Teenagers spent 25 hours watching TV in the initial year which significantly

increased to almost 40 hours per week in the final year. Shopping and going to
pubs and discos more than doubled in hours from over 5 to 15 during this period.

While doing homework took 10 hours every week in 2002, it slightly dropped to
just over 5 hours per week in 2007. Playing sports fell more dramatically from 10
to 3 hours. Bowling was under 5 hours weekly throughout the entire period. The
number of hours teenagers dedicated to watching DVDs was only 10 hours in the
initial and final years, but reached a peak of over 15 hours in 2004 and 2005.
In the modern days, it has become very important for every nation to protect its
borders. This idea leads most of the people to think that the government should
spend most of the funds on the defense sector by cutting funds on social benefits. I
do not agree with this point of view. However, I do believe that both of the sectors
need investment and efforts for any country to grow and prosper.

Firstly, national security is the greatest importance. The forces help a state
maintain peace and protect the borders. If the forces are not there to protect the
civilians, then any other country might attack the nation for some natural
resources, turning the own citizens into slaves to the other country. Moreover, they
help in maintaining law and order within the state as well. For instance, when there
are some terrorist attacks, the special forces are always there helping the civilians
and stop these terroristic acts.

On the other hand, spending funds on defense at the expense of social security is
not beneficial in the long term. If the benefits in the education, health care, food
etc., are not available to the poor, it will lead them to follow the wrong path to
survive. For example, if a poor person is not getting food to satisfy their hunger,
they might go on to commit some crime, such as steal some money, sell drugs and
others. This increases the crime rate in a country making other citizens more
insecure. Therefore, it is also important to help the weaker sections of the society
also to make citizens feel safe.

In conclusion, I think, it is very important to spend on both the national and social
security because there is no nation which can exist on one of them. Every
government needs to find a perfect balance of fund distributions among the sectors
of defense and social benefits.
