Chapter I

Background of the Study

Introduction

The term "student health" refers to the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of

students. It encompasses various aspects of a student's overall health, including their

physical fitness, emotional health, nutrition, sleep patterns, mental health, and social

well-being. Physical health is the aspect of student's health focuses on their physical

well-being, including their overall fitness, energy levels, and ability to engage in

physical activities. It involves maintaining a healthy lifestyle through regular exercise,

proper nutrition, and avoiding harmful behaviors like smoking or excessive alcohol

consumption. Student's mental health refers to their psychological well-being. It

involves their emotional resilience, ability to cope with stress, and overall mental

well-being. Mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, or stress can

significantly impact a student's ability to learn, concentrate, and perform well

academically. The emotional aspect of health refers to an individual's ability to

understand, express, and manage their emotions in a healthy and constructive manner.

It encompasses aspects such as emotional awareness, regulation, resilience, and

interpersonal relationships.

Student retention refers to the ability of educational institutions to keep students

enrolled and engaged in their studies until they successfully complete their academic

programs. he term "retention" refers to the act or process of retaining or keeping

something or someone. It implies the ability to hold onto or maintain possession,

control, or membership of a particular entity or individual. In the context of education,

student retention refers to the ability of an educational institution to keep students


enrolled and engaged in their studies until they successfully complete their academic

programs. It focuses on strategies and initiatives aimed at reducing dropout rates and

ensuring students persist in their educational journey.

Student's health is a state of being physically, mentally and socially well. Research

shown that being well in the overall aspects of health makes a student be more

focused and concentrated on listening and learning in school. It shows that students

that are well nourished have a higher chances of class participation and gets a higher

score in tests than those with poor health. Plenty of student's now are being unhealthy

which causes them to be easily distracted on what they are doing. They can't focus

attentively with the discussions and they usually learn lesser than others. Keeping

your body healthy will benefit you as a student. Health is somehow connected on how

can we achieve the goal that we usually want to aim at school.

This research is conducted with the aims of finding out the effect of student’s

physical, emotional, and mental health to their retention in school lessons of senior

high school students in Escalante National High School. This will also help students,

teachers, parents, and even our future researchers to determine if there is a significant

relationship between student’s health and student’s retention.


Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the effects of student’s physical health towards learning

retention of Grade 11 HumSS DELICANO enrolled in Escalante National Hight

School for the school year 2023-2024.

The following are the sub problems that will need to be answered in conducting

this study:

1. What is the profile of the Escalante National High School senior high school

students in terms of the following:

1.1 Sex

1.2 Age

1.3 Section

2. What is the level of student’s health in terms of their physical health:

2.1 Underweight

2.2 Normal

2.3 Overweight

3. Is there a significant relationship between student’s physical health and learning

retention?
Scope of the Study

This study greatly aims to discover if there is an effects of the student’s health

towards their learning retention. The students involved in this study are the 10 boys

and 10 girls of Grade 11 students section HumSS DELICANO, were randomly

selected. The duration of this study is two quarters that covers the first quarter and

seond quarter of the school year 2022 to 2023 at Escalante Nationa High School

located on Brgy. Alimango in Escalante City.

Delimitation

The researchers focuses only on the mental aspect of student’s health.
